Re: Leaky strake on 2004 Chaparral

i had Gelcoated many bilges and interiors with a "Brush" and had acceptable results. I thought that maybe plastic on top might give me a smooth finish. I was wrong. It made a mess.I had to sand it out.
I didn't want to use my Automotive touch up gun so The Next step was to go down to the store and buy a Preval spray system. Uncertain from what I had read about it, I tried it anyway. For a few bucks I gave it a try. It had a hard time pushing a 10% reduced Gelcoat out. I was expecting orange peel...and i got it ! but It sanded out and polished beautifully.
Epoxy leaves an amine film that must be washed off before coating. I hope that I scrubbed it enough before Gelcoating !

Gel coat doesn't stick all that well to a very well prepared epoxy surface, so if all you did was scrub off the blush it may flake off.

I followed Gougeon's instructions and they said get rid of the "Blush" and scrub surface with a scruby pad and roughen it up. I made sure that it was rough. It is now November and in Florida that means low tides and windy weather. The rain nagged on into the fall and set a record for the wettest in a decade. I tested the boat several times and no water leak and examined the repair. It looks good. We will see !
