Re: Lesson on using ladders

I am pretty sure it was you Kenneth. Something about letting your kid wipe out some structure with a vehicle, and everybody advising you to issue her with a 'ticket'. :D Am sure I have it right.
If everything works to plan, I will put up shots of what i have done with the business over the past 6 months. I have bought 3x Stock-picker Ladders.
They lock-out to a triangle, with 4 wheels on springs, so when you stand on them they sink to stand on the 4 legs. When not standing on them you pull them around on the wheels.
They have a large platform on the top with a waist-high saftey bar going around side-front-side.
We work off them and they seem very safe and stable - a working platform so to speak. To date no mishaps with them. Saw them in Supermarkets. Set me back $1,800 for the 3 of them.
I am hoping they are safe and stable. Will await Stan or anyone elses comments.
Have learnt over the years saftey is important. Nothing worse than having staff off or slowed down through injury, ourselves included too of course.
I am sore today from a whack on elbow joint and muscles pulled aross neck/shoulders from pulling myself up.
Won't quote what the wife called me......
Cheers
Phillip

Yeah! Get a lawyer … then shoot the s.o.b. You’ll feel tons better, and you'll be serving the greater good of the community.
:D

I recommend taking out all frustrations on a lawyer whenever possible. It’s kind of like gardening; it has a certain therapeutic value to it.

Yep, that was me Phil. The structure was my HOUSE and she drove the van into it. Thanks for the reminder. ;)

Phil, If I ever make it to the enchanted land of Australia, can I come stay with you for a while? We could entertain each other for days with tales of these such mishaps. The volkswagon that sprung to life, jumped of the jack stands, and almost ran over me (I was Under it at the time) would put you in stitches!

Morning Phillip,

Yes they are contained in a safety handbook I worked on for an industry client. Most of the info can be gained in this guide on ladders published by the Health and Safety Executive in the UK. The link also allows you to look through some of the other safety work we do............just in case you need it ;)

Your new ladder system sounds very good indeed: we need some photos :D

Finally, and you'll like this: the reason I couldn't respond yesterday was because I was visiting a Health & Safety Office that had just burnt down :D  :D

Excellant Stan. I thank you for that.
I have read through a lot of it and will down-load it.
I will also get some photos of the Stock-Pickers in a day or 2.
You must enlighten us as to how the Health and Saftey Office you were visiting burnt down............especially if it had a human idiot behind it.
TLC,what can I say. To be run over by a pilotless VW.....I mean, that would have to be one of the worst ways to go. Lucky it was only "almost". Let me know when you make it down-under.
Cheers
Phillip

Re: Lesson on using ladders

Talking about stupid miss use of ladders, I had a job to paint the 40' flag pole. Had a 28' extension ladder and a backhoe with a front end loader. We put the loader bucket fully raised up against the pole. Then put the ladder in the bucket, extended it to its max length. Used bungee cords to fasten the ladder to the pole. It still missed the top of the pole by 6'. So being real young and no family at that time, I took a painters mit drenched in shinny silver aluminum paint and climbed up the ladder. Got to the top rung, then I hung onto the pole with my free hand and stood on the very top rung to reach the very tip top of the pole. As I took my painters mit and started painting, all that excess paint left the mit and ran down my arm, over my head and face. Things got slippery, couldn't see, but I did get the job done. Earned me a $20 bonus. The clubhouse manger said that I looked as if I was dipped in chrome. From that day on, I made it a point to never ever do that stunt again. I now have a bucket truck, but it still has it dangers also.

Ladders have caused very many accidents. I have several friends that are on disability due to them. Yeah, I've got picky on what I use for overhead work now.

Re: Lesson on using ladders

Problem is hC, i would have to sue myself, as I am the owner of the outfit, and even if I were to win, by the time I pay the lawyer from what I get from myself, I could be a bit behind.
Hence I will change my practices. I can lift my elbow a bit higher now, so maybe in a few days I can try out Dunaruna's suggestion of liking it.
Cheers
Phillip

Initial investigations are focussing on the following:

A display light was left on in an office; this light is a powerful, upward pointing spotlight which was illuminating a safety poster. The suspiscion is that the poster fell down during the night covering the spotlight and then combusting......................oh how we laughed :D :D :D

No injuries, just damaged building and wounded pride and a lot of sniggering firefighters and police a la Mutley! :D

This is the ladder i spoke of. It is a small one. They come in all heights, some really tall, just wider and longer at base.
Good sized tray on top to put 'things' too.
I even use it to topary the big shrubs in fron to the house. Very stable. Very very expensive though, but to save one broken bone.....they are worth every penny.
Cheers
Phillip

Looks like a good sturdy ladder KP! There isn't any place to get your ringfinger caught on which is good. I know a guy that slipped off a laddder similar to that. It caught his ring and took his finger off.

I tell my boss that any piece of equipment that prevents a long term injury is cheaper than the medical bill.

Re: Lesson on using ladders

Good design of ladder Phillip: looks like someone put a bit of thought into that. Only a few things that we tell people to watch for on alu ladders: check constantly for corrosion (doubt that is a problem in your neck of the woods!) and check the date of manufacture, most have a safe working life of ten years maximum due to the properties of aluminium. The scary thing with aluminium is when it goes it just goes: you seldom get a warning with it. It costs a fortune to replace alu equipment on a ten-year cycle and I often wonder if it's just a cunning marketing ploy? Especially so when I still see MK6 Seaking helicopters flying around with 30 yr old airframes. Guess it must be different grades of alloy that hold the key to that one?

Agree though that expense is worth it if it saves an injury or worse !

Now that is a stupid question txwinner.
I thought everyone would know that you climb up a ladder first, then down a ladder second, irrespective of where you live.
Cheers
Phillip :D
