The weather was cool for this time of year so I spent most of my weekend tearing down a broken tractor putting in seed and trying to salvage my Break out another Thousand with a several measly hundred. ;) How about you?

My family went inshore fishing for spotted sea trout. We only caught one keeper, but also caught a couple of Jack Crevelles (what a blast!), about 25 pinfish, and one 29" shark. My 11-year-old landed the shark himself.

Now I gotta figure out how to deep fry him.

Walked up to the local Cemetery to put flags on war dead graves.

Local vets and families beat me to it. . .including stars and bars on the 5 graves of Confederate war dead.

Put a few finishing touches on RED SKY. Just hope the powerplant passes shakedown sometime this week. :)

Had beautiful weather in the 1000 Islands. Camped for 3 days with GF and son and DIL. We didn't get skunked but close on the fishing. GF caught her first northern (about 16") and we caught small bass and some perch. We are catch and release so they all went back. Bass season isn't open for about 3 more weeks anyhow. Was great boating a nd camping.

After working at the Coca Cola 600 most of the weekend we went out Monday to play on the lake.
So many crazies on the water and about 200 jet fleas made me load up early and come home.
I did sit at the ramp to watch the people load and unload...got a few good laughs!

Saturday we put into the middle Potomac and motored up to Alexandria, VA to see the newly built replica of the Godspeed . The Godspeed is/was one of the three ships that brought America's first permanent English settlers to Virginia in 1607. It was really a beautiful ship. The we cruised over for another look at George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate. We ended the day with soft shell crabs at an on-the-water crab shack.

Sunday we met up with some friends and boated along the upper Potomac to Georgetown and then anchored near the Three Sisters for a day of swimming and relaxation.

Monday we went to the Viva Vienna street fair and my boy went on his first ferris wheel and first carousel ride. He also held his thingy and pee'd like a big boy for the first time! Woohoo!

Re: Let's hear about those fabulous Memorial Day Trips

Well we had an up and down weekend, mostly up:

We started up on Mead Friday mid-morning, decent day, but it blew really hard in the afternoon causing this, which appears to be a minor navigation error by a rental boater:

Rental%20on%20tires.jpg

By Saturday AM it was apparent that we were gonna have one of the worst wind storms in recent memory so we hauled out and joined the Hotel Boat Show:

But then we got smart and decided to go down below Hoover dam (same area as my Avatar). With the steep canyon walls, it is a great place to get out of the wind:

Willow%202.jpg

And then we went back up to Mead for an absolutely perfect Sunday:

Mushroom%20beach.jpg

I have to add that on Monday morning when we hauled out to go home, the guy in the pic with the blue Chaparral pulled an SHT. I was in his truck with his trailer at the ramp when he decided he needed a little power bump onto the trailer. I had put his trailer right next to the ramp courtesy dock. He had already trimmed out the drive and punched it. He completely soaked a poor guy standing on the dock and his boat sitting directly behind us . . .  :D Another reason not to power load!

It was crazy at the boat landing this weekend! I told my wife I didn't want to go due to the crowds. Launching wasn't a problem, but getting the boat in was hard since it got a little bottle-necked at the landing and my wife can't back the trailer (very well anyhow). I found myself in a position where I needed to be in two places at one time.

Yep, the shark is supper tonight. I cut him into steaks and will fry him tonight. I might also try to grill a few of the larger steaks.

Drove to Memphis (379 mi.) to attend all the graduation exercises of U. of Tenn. Health Sciences. Got to see my son "walk" on graduation day for the 4th time - high school, undergraduate, dental, and now, orthodontics. It couldn't be better and his mom and I couldn't be more proud.

Drove 400 miles round trip to climb the Astoria Column:

Astoria-Column.jpg

astoria1.jpg

The Astoria Column, in a clearing atop Astoria, Oregon's highest hill, draws an “Oh, Wow!” from most visitors with its spectacular views of the city and its surrounding forest, mountains, rivers, bay and ocean. The Column, built in 1926 for $32,550, is 125 feet high and has 164 steps spiraling to the top. While the view is best from the column's summit it's also pretty impressive from the surrounding park.

Patterned after the Trajan Column in Rome, the Astoria Column is the world's only large piece of memorial architecture made of reinforced concrete with a pictorial frieze in sgraffito technique. The column artwork illustrates the discovery of the Columbia River by Captain Robert Gray in 1792, the establishment of American claims to the Northwest Territory, the winning of the west and the arrival of the Great Northern Railway.

After nearly 70 years of exposure to coastal weather and salt air, time had begun to take its toll on the Astoria Column's unique artwork. By 1995, many of the pictures had deteriorated nearly to the point of invisibility. But the Friends of the Astoria Column and the Astoria community worked together to restore and preserve the artistic character of the column. Internationally renowned experts spent six months cleaning, reconstructing and restoring the images to their original luster and their completed work was unveiled in November, 1997.

That's QC speak for everybody was in the parking lot due to the wind :D There is really only one hotel/casino on Lake Mead. It is 3 miles from Hoover dam and during this time of year it is taken over by boaters. We're kinda like a bunch of bikers except we have kids and we're nice and we don't shoot each other . . .
