Level Floatation for a 73 cobia

I have a 1973 cobia centaur, 18ft. I replaced the deck, along with new stringers. There wasn't any foam in the hull, so I did not add any either. A friend of mine informed me of USCG requirements of Level Floatation requirements for under 20' boats. I know now that I probably should have added some type of flotation, but l didn't. I now have legal concerns and safety concerns. Can somebody add some clarity to my confusion?

As I understand it, the original manufacturer was required to add foam. Your choice whether to replace it or not. Yours most likely had it at some point.

The topic has plenty of ardent supporters on both sides of the fence. Start with reading the threads listed below and go from there.

I recently came across a document that was a coast guard help for home boat builders.

It documents how to determine power for your boat, and has requirements for flotation also.

So I am not sure it is at the discresion of the "re-builder"

Ayuh,... Unless you're an OEM, it doesn't concern you...

I have the back yard boat builders guide on my computer, however it is to large to attatch to the post...

It specifically covers the requirement for basic flotation and the need for level flotation...

So are you saying that this only applies to "new construciton" by a private builder and not to rebuilds?

The big question here is do I cut my new deck to add floatation or not?

No -- leave it alone. You should have added flotation when rebuilding, but it's done now so I sure wouldn't cut it apart. Live and learn, do it on the next one. :)
