voltage regulator.jpgsolenoid box.jpgYes, it's mounted on the transom inside. The voltage regulator in there as well. Today I remade the entire wiring harness from the pass through plug to each termination point. Now I will be able to use the harness from the engine to the boat. It is in ok shape. The solenoid and the voltage regulator look rough, but working. Wire in box have connectors that are brittle. One fell off.

Re: Lifting the Johnson

I finished reworking the electrical box. It came out quite well. I reused the voltage regulator, I'm pretty sure it is still working (although not sure. Also not sure which terminals are what). But, all I need is the starter motor fixed and I can fire it up again!Electrical box original condition 1.jpgElectrical box original condition 2.jpgfinished electrical box 1.jpg

Pull start that baby. They start easy. I used two hands on the starter rope, choke manually on. Now snap your hands to your chest. A couple of pulls and she should start.

I suppose you're disappointed that no one commented on the wording of your subject header!

Pull starting a 4 cylinder 50 hp! I had to do it once on an 85 hp - back when men were men and sheep were scared...

Re: Lifting the Johnson

This monster ran when I brought it home, although I'm not sure how when you look at the wiring. Anyway there's no way I can pull start this motor, becuase of a torn rotator cuff. I'll have the neighbor over for a "beer", lol, he's a boater too. Next is the wiring harnesses, on the ends that attach to the electrical box. Those wire ends are toasty, and the wiring jackets need repair. I'll get that done and fire it up. youtube video link WILL be posted. The sheep are safe for another day....

Bonzo, That motor is surprizingly easy to pull start. It chokes up real easily. and it is only 70 cu in. Trust me, the sheel were never afraid of me and I could do it....

rebuilt starter.jpg

Got the new starter lug soldered on. It is a bit bigger than the old one but I can always make the connector bigger if I have to. brushes were in excellent condition, eveyrthing looked good. After all this worked when I got it, just the lug was badly cracked and virtually fell off when I first touched it. No really I promise. LOL... Anyway the wire ends on the motor harness wire, and the ends on the front cable. That shouldn't take too long, and then I'm gonna go get some gas, and a 55 gallon drum.

Well I finally finished the renovation of this motor. It's been 2 years since I got it! The prop is off getting fixed and then onto the boat again.
