*** Light coats of Vaseline or Marine Gear Lube will assist in installing a new impeller. I did not find this stressed enough or realize it it until attempted to trial fit the new impeller. I doubled back into my sources to see where I missed this info and found very little info. On-line I googled, " Is a boat motor?s impeller installed with light grease?" and found the info in #5.

Installing the new water pump impeller

1. Make sure you have the right impeller and gaskets or seals.

2. Use some Vaseline or light grease and put on drive shaft to hold the impeller key in place.

3. Slide the impeller down the drive shaft making sure the key is in place to lock the impeller.

4. To test it hold the drive shaft and try to turn the impeller, if the impeller turns, repeat no. 3.

5. When you have the impeller and all gaskets or seals in place, apply some lubricant to the inside of the impeller pump housing and slide the housing down the drive shaft to the impeller.

6. While gently applying down pressure on the impeller housing slowly turn the drive shaft clockwise and the housing should slide down over the impeller.

7. Install bolts or hex nuts getting them good and snug, do not overtighten.

8. Reinstall lower drive unit.

* Installing the impeller is an inside project, lower unit later in this weather.

You should NOT use Vaseline for the same reason you should not use it with condoms: Vaseline can deteriorate some rubber compounds. It is PREFERABLE to use some type of liquid soap or a specified rubber lubricant.

Good info Frank! It?s 60 years too late to learn Vaseline deteriorates some rubber compounds. I had always thought Vaseline was very friendly and a good common lubricant. I?ll have to warn my Dr or maybe he uses a Vaseline Gel on his gloves? Now I Know! Two things, which includes I did read to use soap inside the water pump's housing.

Thanks,

Oops! I forgot to ask if lifting the driveshaft out of the lower unit while replacing the water pump?s impeller is a ?Do Not??? I?m reading that this could or will lead to having to disassemble the lower unit. Is this referring to the 1970 35 HP Chrysler? I did not lift mine but easily could have. Not knowing I would have assumed it fitted into a splinned gear locked in-place in the lower unit.

The pinion gear is located between the two gearcase halves by a ball bearing. For this reason, if the gasket is replaced, it MUST be the same thickness as the stock one to preserve pinion and driven gear backlash clearance. The drive shaft is straight splined into the pinion with no retaining nut. The only thing that locates it is the impeller drive pin, so it can be lifted and lowered a bit--threr is some slop. If the water pump casing is not removed, forcing out the drive shaft will cause the impeller drive pin to ruin the pump upper seal and possibly bend the pin. If the pump casing is removed, the drive shaft can be slid right out with no damage to anything and can be slipped back in with no adjustments.

YEP! Vaseline is the reason my oldest daughter is here and 36. LOL

When your Dr. uses surgical gloves for an internal exam, he/she will use a water based gel such as Surgilube. KY Jelly sold over the counter at drugstores is also water based.
