Can someone please tell me the principals behind this altenator driven ignition(1975,500,AD-CD)?

How the switch plays its part, and how it can be tested(w/specs.)(DVA?)

this is what I think I have figured out so far. the coils (low/high) inside the distributor generate volts. That power is sent to the switch (somehow)that is triggered (somehow) to send the power to the ignition coil.

does the switch act similar to an auto module, taking the place of points? will the motor still run if it is bad, or is it an all or nothing thing? How do you test it?

The coils are high and low speed? does this mean they function exactly as it sounds?

I know this is a lot and any help would be appreciated.
