I was working on the boat and had the lifter rods all pulled out and in order. One minute later, my little 2 year old helper brought a handfull of them back to me, saying, "Here go daddy". :)

Anyway, could someone tell me if the circle stamped on the push rod goes up or down. All manuals that I've read say, "keep them in the same order that you pulled them out." Well, that ain't happenin. Thanks for your help.

Yeehaaaa!!

Got your own built in gremlin.

What engine?
Had that happen to me(by accident) on SBC. All you can do without replacing the lifters and rockers is clean and blow them out and put them back in.

Flat tappet lifters are made to rotate so the pushrods are at least 'lapped' in their 'socket'

:) It's a mercrusier 4.3 V6 - 1991.

Is there a correct UP or DOWN position? There is a circle stamped into the end of each push rod.

Lifter Rods are the only things that were removed from the engine. Lifters were never removed & rockers were kept in correct order.

You have roller lifters. Better check with service manual for that. Rollers don't rotate. Check with boatfix or summit racing for replacement if you have to. push-rods are cheap.

Not quite. Flat tappet hydraulic lifters rotate and create a specific wear pattern between each lifter and one end of the push rod. The other end of the push rod makes it's wear pattern to it's specific rocker.

All rebuilding books of these older generation engines tell you to keep all these parts in their proper order.

BS...I have been rebuilding engine for well over 20+ years...the pushrods have NO preference which end is which on many engines...

Chrysler, Ford or GM....which end goes up or down does not matter with pushrods with ball ends...there are NO wear patterns for pushrods....they are meant to be flipped and many do at rebuild time...on GM there is usuallu a shiny spot where the pushrod has touched the head indicating that shiny spot up...but in your case you will not as you have self-aligning rocker arms...

It make NO difference what order they go in or which end is up or down...

I've built a dozen or so SBC's and I've never kept pushrods in order or up or down. I just throw them in.

Sure, you can slap any engine together. I've been rebuilding everything from VW to Mercedes and harleys to chev for 30+ years. I like to go by the book.

If you include my first lawnmower, it's over 50 years.

Rock on, Ryan ! At least for me, that is what it is all about. Enjoy, the rods will work out however you re-install them. Remember this story when he is 15 and driving you up the wall.:D
