I either have no reverse or no forward gear.

Chrysler 55hp (1970)

I'm not sure whats going on here.
I set the linkage per one of "Franks" posts. When we got to the dock, fired it up and it reved up trying to go into reverse. But forward would grab fine.
Put it on the trailer adjusted. docked it, and then we have reverse but revs in forward.

While in the water I'm making small adjustmets, Like 1/4 to 1/2 turns with no good results. We either see to engage into forward then reverse will rev up. Or engage into reverse, then forward will rev.

I dont want to to a full throttle engage.. Are we talking about a cable adjustment here?
How Do I adjust the cables properly? Standard single handle dual chrysler cable system.

Re: Linkage and cable adjustments.

I feel I have the same linkage and control, ?or close?, as you have. I have not had to make this linkage adjust due to removing my cotter pin (in the leg) to drop the lower unit vs linkage connection.

Back to the basics and history. Has the motor shifted fine for you before? Have you dropped the lower unit or worked with the linkage before the present problem? Seems like I remember you have only had barrel experience with this motor but you still could have experienced shifting the gears. Either way, I?ll suggest you disconnect the linkage and manually move the linkage to the forward/neutral/ reverse positions to know they work. Mark the linkage positions for F/N/R on the leg to compare with the connected linkage. Plus, compare the travel with what the control is giving.

With my limited experience, I feel your needed adjustments will come from the history info and linkage adjustments vs control adjustment. From what I think I noticed, the control adjustments had more to do with positioning etc. on the motor (as not cranking in gear due to the neutral switch being activated). At the control on my unit, there are no adjustments, they are on the motor. I have many Pics if needed but I feel you?ll get ?In Gear? w/o a control adjust unless something slipped or was moved. This will probably relate more to starting vs shifting. Good Luck!

Re: Linkage and cable adjustments.

Yes, it's only barrel experience with this motor.
Just got it this spring. So No history.
I removed the lower leg and replaced the seals.

I've set the linkage as per one of franks posts. When I move the shift lever by hand and get it to engauge into both gears equally.

But when I hook up the cables, I'll have reverse but no forward. If I adjust the shift rod I can get it to go into forward but then revs in reverse. This is why I think it's a cable issue. Perhaps the control box itself.

Re: Linkage and cable adjustments.

Here's what I did last night and today.

Reset the shift rod to equal reverse and forward.

The major adjustment I had to make was the cable ends inside the control box. After playing with it for about an hour in the driveway and 15 minutes at the dock. I got it to go forward and in reverse. WOT and cruise..

Thanks..

Re: Linkage and cable adjustments.

Good work on your part! Possibly, bad info on my part for not looking closer. From the attached pics I might see a nut that will allow some adjustment. I?ll still say the history before ?New Problems? will usually help in tracking the "New Problems" if it?s analyzed good.

I?m not seeing this control model in Clymer Chrysler/Force 3.5 ?140 HP 1966-1988 Outboard Shop Manual. This would be a good manual for ?some? of your questions on your model Chrysler. I have no idea where my wife found the manual. It shows the coil and condenser tester related to the one I have used. I have 2 other sources that are not as friendly to use or I have not used them enough. The manual on CD is the hardest for me to use, probably related to your PDF files vs hard copies. Plus, I have another older Clymer 25 to 135 HP 1966-1977 Chrysler O/B Service Handbook (that d/n show a control adjustment). The Public Library here has a fair collection of manuals.
