Re: Linksys wireless looses connection

I spent about an hour with Linksys online chat. I cant tell you how much fun that was. Between them and looking over the manual there is no lan monitor for Windows XP for my adaptor. The only option is to run Windows wireless zero configuration service. Redoing the modem was a no go and going to WEP instead of WPA was no good. It has to be a problem with the router. Had it lock up on me this afternoon using a static IP and I had to unplug it and then it ran fine. I guess it is time to go shopping.

Re: Linksys wireless looses connection

Best buy has a linksys WRT54G router for 50 bucks. It seems to run a lot more stable. I have run it now for 10 hours without a disconnect. I am still using a wus11b adapter which works fine but I want to upgrade to a wusb54g wireless adapter however I noticed it mentions a USB 2.0 port. This is a 5 year old pentium 3 866 Mhertz machine with two USB ports and I doubt either one is a 2.0 Port. Will this adapter not work with a standard USB port or will it just run slower? I cant find much information on 2.0 ports. Does anyone know what that is?

The wusb54g will work with either USB 1.1 or 2.0 but the latter will allow faster data transfer rates. The data transfer issues only apply to data that is tranfered between two or more computers on your own LAN.

BTW, what version WRT54G did you get? I'll assume it's version 5 as the ealier models are usually long gone. Sadly, the version 5 runs a non Linux OS. The version 5 model will work just fine, but you won't be able to upgrade the firware to 3rd party versions.

Re: Linksys wireless looses connection

The router is version 5. I dont know what the 3rd party version would do for me (I am guessing that is something so I can access it away from home say with TiVo or host online gaming). My wife is planning on getting one more computer on this system which would make 3 which I am sure will not be a problem. It has been running 27 hours now with no glitchs which I think is a record. Router must have had something wrong with it.

So upgrading the adapter will not get me any more speed on the internet using Wireless? For 60 bucks then I dont need it. I have the router configured for B wireless only. Sure seems like the computer hardwired to the router is running a lot faster now as well.

The only difference the faster wireless adaptor is going to give you is faster data transfer rates between your computers during file transfers. You won't see any faster web surfing....

3rd party firmware gives you added features not built-in to the factory router. If your home/office layout is large or you're having range issues, a 3rd party firmware allows you to crank up the RF output of the router, increasing it's range. Other features such an making your router a true VPN router are also featured.

The current WRT54GS models can be 'modified'. A couple of favorite 3rd party firmwares include HyperWRT and DD-DRT...

Re: Linksys wireless looses connection

Xcusme I just want to thank you for all your help and the education you have given me during this and all my other internet problems over the years. I upgraded the routers firmware and everything is going great. WPA is on and I am running with static IP address on this wireless machine. A week ago I would not have known what that meant. Thanks again.
