I have a 79 crestliner crusader i/o mericruiser. The problem is, when I start off at a low speed my boat runs fine. However, when I pick up speed my boat lists (leans) to the port side, and rises on the starboard side. Any recomendations?

Re: Listing

This is pretty typical of a boat with a single propeller that turns standard direction. The torque of the propeller going clockwise (viewing behind the stern) makes the boat want to twist counter to that . . . i.e. to port.

I assume this is your problem, but I guess it could be something else too depending on how severe this issue is. Some propeller designs are worse than others. This is also one of the reasons that most boats have the helm to starboard, so that your weight helps balance her if you are alone. If this is in fact the normal propeller torque issue, then the only real fix is adjustable trim tabs like Bennett's or Lenco's. You can find them right here at iboats:

Thanks for the info, it sounds like that might be it. I will try it.

Re: Listing

QC;

Please note that we (Smart Tabs) correct this type of list on many boats as well. We address this in our instructions. You simply increase the port tab pressure, and reduce the starboard side pressure. Works every time.

Yes, John I was aware, but I thought you had said it was only if the list was fixed. Maybe I misunderstood? I guess I was thinking that SmartTabs would not be as effective at full speed and trimmed all the way out when they are all the way up. Great if they work as the cost is lower.

Re: Listing

Hi QC;

We consider a torque list fixed. Understanding that it only occurs as the boat achieves cruising speeds and up as the resistance to the prop rotation increases. By in creasing the pressure on one side you compensate for the list. In many cases where the list is not severe, the tabs will compensate for the list without adjsutment.

Nearly any fixed balance problem such as a kicker motor or bait tank mounted off center can be corrected with Smart Tabs, In addition to the torque list.

As for normal running issues and weight shifts, Smart Tabs would provide correction similar to a car suspension system. If you load a car more on one side the list will be there but the suspension system will minimize or reduce the list.

If the boat is more than 9" wide, and weight balance is a serious issue, we would tell the customer to go to a helm controlled system.

In any case it is always a matter of personal preference. I personally have used and become proficient at using helm controll tabs, and do not find them cumbersom to use, but there are many people who do not spend the time in a boat as I do and have, and use their boats for "sports", these people do find the helm controlled tabs less than convenient. Two different markets, and applications.

Harley,

May be off base here, but it is unclear to me if this is new problem with a boat you have had for a while or the boat is new to you and so is the problem.

Could the problem be as simple as you leaving the outdrive trimmed too low? This would also create the list you describe.

Harley;

BSMan is correct, If you leave the trim down too far when cruising, the bow is too far in the water and the result is that the boat will bow steer, and list.

Same effect as when you run with a hydrofoil on a V bottom boat.
