Little outboard serial # question for the experts

OK so I'm still new to the forums and even newer to Johnson motors. I'm looking to buy a 9+ hp outboard and keep seeing many 9.5 Seahorse's neeer than 73, one I'm looking at is a 78 and one is a 79. So here goes the question. We have to have titles for all motors in my state and everything I've found says 73 was the last year for the 9.5? So do you think these were titled the year they were sold or did in fact Johnson make 9.5 post 73 and I'm just not finding that info. I don't have ser. # to offer but when I go look would you suggest checking the ser # for year regardless of title?

I think the 9.5hp was made between 1964 and 1973 only. In 1974 they introduced the 9.9hp.Which is a completely different motor.

You need the model # to date an evinrude/johnson. They replaced the 9.5 with the 9.9 in 1974 and the 9.9 is a much more powerful motor.

Correct, 73 was the last year for the " low profile " 9.5 hp model.---And the model # is used to determine the year.--Not the serial #

So if both titles say they are a 1978 & a 1979 9.5 and the model number says 9.5 then the titles are incorrect because they did not build 9.5 post 73? I'm seeing post 1973 9.5 seahorses all over cl and asking for model numbers to save the drive to find out there older than the titles are claiming. Thanks for the info.

???-----We have said that 73 was the last production year for the 9.5 hp models.

Thanks, just verifying one more time the titles are incorrect before I question the sellers if they are wrong about the model or the year. Most get defensive when you insinuate they could be mistaken so I wanted to be sure. Thanks again.

Tell them to send you pics and the model #s it will tell you what the motor is. Stay on the couch and who cares if they get mad it's your money you are spending.
