....I haven't actually used a timing lamp on the engine, just manually turned the rotor till it was running as smooth as possible.

And that will usually mean the timing is too far advanced... That'll be a major contributing factor to that ex-head gasket....

There's never time to do it right the first time, but always time to do it over....

plugs look kinda white, what plug you running . Too lean at hi-speed will detonate too.

Ok, first thing then, bought a timing light, boy was I in for a surprise. Like 14? btdc. That's just terrible. Got it set right and was boating for 8hrs yesterday. Heavy load, no load etc. It worked liked a champ. Hopefully it will hold now.
