I have a AB rigid inflatable boat, that has a fiberglass hull with a inflatable tube attached to both sides of the boat, the tube extends about 5 inches behind the transom. I am having a disagreement about the "length " of the boat if you measure the fiberglass hull it's 11,8 but with the tube that extends behind the transom it's 12,5. The dingy dock that I keep it at has a 12 ft max limit, but nowhere in their bylaws do they define "length " I have read the coast guards definition of loa and think that it's 12ft not 13ft?

Re: Loa

Has anything happened to cause your concern? Have they told you that you are over length? Seems like this is the Marina's call, not the Coast Guard or ours ;)

Re: Loa

So what is the disagreement? By your own measurement the boat is over 12' LOA when inflated.

Unless the marina uses LWL, I think you will have to deflate each time you dock!

They sent me a letter staying that if I leave on the dock they will have it removed
I just measured on the trailer at its 12,2 I read that the cost guard will round that to 12 feet the state reg says 12ft
And actualy it's a propery assos common dock, where I am a land owner, so they say they reserve the right to have my membership is good standing revoked, the bylaws only state boats over 12ft may not be left on the dock, it does not state what they are using for 12 ft loa or mfg length ect it's hard to believe there making a issue over 2" but they are.

Re: Loa

The coast guard has nothing to do with it. If the owners of the dingy dock say 12' max LOA, then they are measuring the total length, doesn't matter what the CG calls it or the manufacturer. If they put a tape measure on it and it's over 12', you loose. Deal with it.
It's a private business.

Re: Loa

Yes, if you have an inflatable that's 15' with an inflatable floor but rolls up to a 2' bundle you would not call that a 2' boat, would you? Inflated and useable it's 15'. Yours inflated and useable is more than 12' of actual length.

Re: Loa

What part of Length Over All do you not understand.

Fair enough but do you include the pontoon that extends past the transom?

It's part of the pontoon isn't it?? Yes you count that.
And if you have an outboard on the boat when you park it there, and it sticks out past the pontoons, it's counted too.

Length over all means the total length of what you are parking there.

You have a truck with a 12' interior from the inside front to the inside of the rear overhead door when it's closed. You load the boat completely inflated. Will the door close? Yes or No?

That is LOA my friend. Not Length of Hull, nor Length Deflated...unless you'e going to tie the dinghy to the dinghy dock deflated. The owner of the dinghy dock has the right to set and interpret their own rules.

They aren't registering your boat or advertising it; they are measuring how long it really is because they really don't allow boats over 12'. Your boat is over 12'.

No boats at the dinghy dock over 12'. That is pretty specific. They don't need to be more specific because other entities play games. Okay, let's repeat that. 12' mean 12'. They don't have to redefine what 12' is just because other entities round up/down, etc.

Also, it sounds like they are clarifying by insisting 12' and no more. If you could show they were allowing other 12' 2" boats and they were discriminating against you, I'd be curious to hear their side.

Otherwise, 12' means..... 12'.

And the Post Office would measure it and say it was 13! They round UP everything!

But this is not a goverment issue, It is a private matter.

If the Property Association says it's over 12... it may be time to get a smaller dingy!
OR.... Get a petition going to change the ByLaw!

Maybe you can make a 'donation' to the Property Association Assistance Fund. *wink, *wink.

If you measure the loa at 12.5, that is what it is. What the CG says has no bearing on this. It is a business just like Don says.

Victoria's Secret underwire, 44DD, with a couple of ratchet straps will take care of that right quick... then you'll be good to go.

Why don't you just pay someone to cut off the last 2" of the tubes? You won't miss it.

I think we're gonna need a picture. Can't quite imagine this. (Or at least what I'm imagining may not be what you're saying)

Re: Loa

If 12'2" is OK then why not 12'3" or hey my boat is only 12'4". Gotta have rules and as soon as you let someone break them even a little bit,,,,there goes the dam.
