Re: Location of MerCrusier Timing Marks

Is your flywheel rusty, and maybe your vibration dampner on the front of the engine?
Is it the same on both engines? Do both engine turn the same direction?

To be quite honest, if this was my boat, I would get one of the adjustable timing tabs, and a piston stop, and make my own accurate timing marks on the vibration dampner and the timing tab on both engines. Then set them to Merc specs for the 5.7 MIE engine from the OEM service manual. You can borrow my manual if you want, Click here to download it.

While the OEM manual doesn't show how to adjust the timing on the flywheel, it may be a SeaRay setup. Merc did a lot of special stuff for Searay in that era that may not show up in a Mercruiser manual. Similar to what Glastron did with Volvo engine and drives.

Re: Location of MerCrusier Timing Marks

I just hope he doesn't charge me rent! I will need to down load it at home as work won't let me do it.

hey Don, the manual I have is #9 (90-14499-1). I sent a message to MerCruiser along with my serial numbers. We will see what they come back with. I am hoping they didn't send me the wrong manual......

The difficult thing here is the heat exchanger sits right above the the hole in the bell housing. Man what a bad way to set up the timing marks. Would have been earies to set them up front like any other engine I have ever worked on or rebuilt.

This didn't help:

Mr. Teseniar,

I tried to find the instructions for setting the timing from the flywheel but could not find anything in any of our Service Manuals. I'm sorry that I could not be of more assistance but if this is the way the timing needs to be set according to your manual please take the boat to an authorized MerCruiser Dealer for assistance.

The Service Manual # 9. part # 90-14499-1 is the correct manual for your engine serial number.

Glory Be!!!!

I found the timing "DOT!" It took rubbing sandpaper on the starter ring and several passes by the #1 position and a very bright flashlight. A freck'in ***** dot!!!

So tomorrow I can finally set the timing!

A dot.......................

Now the big question. Is that dot at TDC or 8? BTDC.

I still think it would be easier to set up up as I stated before. Where you can see it today and tomorrow and next year etc.

Dang Don, you know how to take the wind out of my sails! :D

I think I am going to buy a two new dampners and timing covers from MerCruiser and just be done with it. I thought of just going to my local auto store, but they are counter rotating engines so they would be a little differant.......

Re: Location of MerCrusier Timing Marks

If that dot is TDC, your gonna need an advance timing light, like the one from Craftsman in the link. set the knob to whatever your timing is to be say 8' BTDC, then rotate distributor until your dot is align with the timing mark and done. 8' advance.

That Craftsman is cheap money and an antique today, they now have em in digital and also read RPM on em.

You don't need to buy new dampners. With the piston stop and and a timing tab, you can make your own mark in the dampner that is right at 0? TDC. It's not hard to do, and it's dead accurate.

Of course, with that dot on the flywheel and the piston stop you can determine if it's 0 or 8. Then you would know for sure and you could use the advance timing light.
