I have a 1972 85hp model 85ESL-72R with a broken lock release rod. I can't figure out how to install the new rod. Do I have to remove the engine to get access to the back of the lock release lever?
Thanks

Re: Lock Release Rod

That's a heckuva' question Rich......I took a gander at the parts breakdown but really can't tell. Never really replaced one before. I got an 85 at the shop....I'll take a look tomorrow and see if I can figure something out. Maybe one of the other guys will know.

Signed.....Stumped......

Thanks OBJ,
I will look for your reply.
There is hardly any space to install the new rod and there is a cotter pin that looks like you would need a 2 foot long tweezers to remove?
Rich

Re: Lock Release Rod

Well you would know that the 85 I have in the shop is a 73' and there are difference in the way the lock rod is installed. Looked at a service manual (they don't always cover this area real good) and along with the parts breakdown, it looks like if your released the lock lever spring and removed the pins holding the locking lever and the lock lever links in place, you may be able to replace the rod with out pulling the engine. Now mind, this just what it looks like from the illustrations.

The link is BRP's site for parts catalogs. Click on "View Catalogs" and follow the prompts. When you get to your engine, look at the mid section parts. this will give you some help as to what you need to do. I know we ain't been much help but hopefully from the info we got to you, it'll help.

http://epc.brp.com/login.aspx?Retur...rlocator=no&brands=ej&lang=E&dealerlocator=no

Re: Lock Release Rod

Thanks OBJ,
I will give it another try. I did buy a service manual and it only says "remove the lock lever connecting rod" without any hints on how to do it. It looks like I have to remove the cotter pin holding the lock release lever so it can slide forward to accept the new rod. My owners manual says that I only have to remove 2 locknuts and 2 screws to remove the engine so it shoulden't be to much of a job?
Thanks again for the help.

Re: Lock Release Rod

I was able to install the new release rod yesterday without removing the engine. The cotter pin holding the lock release lever needs to be removed in order for the lever to slide out far enough to insert end of the new rod. Very tight space to acess but it can be done.
