Hey all,.
I have a long shaft lower unit from a Johnson 115 looper that I would like to change to short. I have the needed parts. The driveshaft and water inlet are straight forward enough. What I'm wondering is the shift rod. I have rebuilt smaller lower units that you had to align the shaft in place with special tools and do it partial disassembled. If I unscrew the shaft on the 115, will everything stay in place long enough for me to get the new shorter shaft screwed back in?
Thanks.

O k, so I thought the shift shaft was going to be the hard part, but I'm struggling to figure out how to remove the upper driveshaft. (The water pump is removed) .
On my short shaft one it pulled out while prying off lthe lower unit. What is retaining this one on the lower unit?

Both are identical. Both are 1996 and off of v4 60degree 115 loopers .

If they look identical to you, you must give me the name of your Optometrist

Lol, prob could use a optomitrst. The differences that I now see are the raking of the skeg, rake above the driveshaft, and the 25 is v'd at the back of the cavitation plate.

So, now knowing the difference, is the upper driveshaft removable on the top (25") one?

Thanks.

Sorry for the delay I didn't see the second page. The prop shaft on the 25 is larger (didn't count the splines). The shaft on the 20 has a step reducing the size before the splines.
Thanks

Reason for the questions is -------Trying to determine that the EXTRA LONG units were in fact a V-6 lower unit used for some years.

Sorry, so much for being detail oriented in this thread . The threads are quite a bit larger on the 25. 1/2 inch for the 20 and 3/4 inch for the 25.
