Re: Long tow this winter

My good friend in the trailer repair business taught me long ago that springs and shackles cause a lot of the bigger trailer problems. He had me drench the springs with a can of motor oil, placing cardboard or newspapers under them first. Don't do it on concrete, and let it sit overnight.
Here in Florida, I soak my springs in salt water every time I launch, and you would not believe how well they hold up after this oil treatment. I repeat this ever spring(no pun intended :D) No, they do not collect every bit of sand or grime as may be imagined, and it really helps to quiet and soften the ride. Might be worth a shot! Good luck on your journey to your new abode...:)

Re: Long tow this winter

I rented a truck and towed a boat from Orlando Florida to Seattle a few years ago, I flew in and had about half a day to rent a truck and get the trailer ready to go and had no problems. Some rental companies will let you tow your own trailer and some won't, many of the rental trucks were junk and didn't look like they would make it to the other side of town, so don't agree to a deal until you see the truck you're getting. I think it was Penske I rented from and it will most likely be a box van you get, they wouldn't allow towing with a smaller rig. Since you're moving you may already be renting one of the larger trucks, I towed a boat from Seattle to Fort Smith Arkansas with one of the largest you can rent and I couldn?t even tell there was anything behind the truck.

Have you considered at least getting a quote from a vehicle transport company? They do boats as well as cars. Here is one link where you can get quotes online. I think it would be worth it to at least get a quote and compare that to your cost to tow it out there yourself. It could save a lot of grief.

All things considered, I'd suggest using a gps for the trip.
Even if you know the route, they can still be handy.
The voice on my Navigon 2100 says "Caution!" when I go
10mph over the speed limit. Neat, and Good advice...
Have a good trip.
