Longblock: new manifolds and risers on 1989 OMC?

I have a 1989 OMC 5.8L that popped a freeze plug due failure of my heretofore trusty winterYzer antifreeze-through-the-muffs winterization method. Had it repaired, only to discover water in crankcase when I went to change oil in July. Ops!

I am going to longblock it. (Rapido Marine) Do I automatically replace exhaust manifolds and risers, or have them inspected first? Boat has been in saltwater less than 5 times since 1989 when on week long vacations to Florida. Rinsed well.

If I inspect them first, how do I instruct the shop so there will be no misunderstandings?

I want to try to get all the parts I am going to replace (front water pump, thermostat, sending units, distributor cap and SP wires) in advance to save money on parts and to speed reassembly (ie, save labor costs).

With a new engine i would not take the chance.Replace them. Its worth the piece of mind and your new engine will thank you for it..:D
Plus you will know they are good for a few years to come.

I was in the same situation as you. I was trying to save the extra 430.00 and reuse my old but the overwhelming majority said it was a bad idea.
I think it was ebasicpower (on ebay) where I got them shipped for that price.

No, it doesn't matter. This could be a case of pennywise and dollar foolish. It would be like getting a new girlfriend and not buying a box of baby stoppers.

my motor is from rapino and i got a ton of stuff from basic power fast shipping great prices. my motor has not run yet so i cannot coment on how nice it is. i can say this he sold me manifolds with the motor and i overpaid for the a little . but..i had a rusty everything. if i could do it all over again i would have gotton a complete long block for 5k or so verse's spending all the time and money in shop for parts and labor. it all ad's up to the same number. but i live in the city with no garage. and i learned the hard way. if you want something done ...most of the time do it yourself. i am 45 and have worked on cars since 9 yrs old and got tired of it so i thought it would be better if i got someone else to do it. i picked the wrong shop. the last 5 years or more i been buying new cars so i dont have to work on them

According to laboatparts an Moores Performance Marine, there aren't any more manifolds for a 89 OMC 5.8 Ford. He advised me to take good care of what I had!
