I'm wondering if it is possible to convert back to the short shaft configuration? I believe my father had the dealer add the long shaft back in 1976 to fit our boat at the time. The engine may have 50hrs on it and is in prestine conditon. I'm condidering building a small hydroplane and need to mount a short shaft on it. If possible, how big of a job is this? And are there any sites or directions that can assist in this process? Sorry for the long message.

Thanks,
pfistey1

If it already had a short shaft originally, I'm sure you can do it. Check ebay and maybe you'll get lucky. Call around to local shops and see if they have a complete short ***'y lying around.
Good luck

I just converted a 1971 evinrude 25 hp from a long to a short. You need a short drive shaft. I found a used for a $150.00, you also need a new water tube or you may be able to cut the old one, and you will need a short shifter rod. Yours may have a 5" extension on it now. If so you can remove the extension. I did not feel I had the skill to do this conversion myself so I paid a wrench to do it. Total bill including all parts a new water pump and housing and resealing the lower unit. $450.00 Good luck if it's a good motor it's worth it.
