Re: Looking at a used 1999 Chris Craft 200 w/ volva penta 5.0

Well I picked up the boat yesterday. Other than what appeared to be a little old gas, it ran quite well during the water test. All other inspection areas turned out fine and other than a little dirty, it seems to be a fantastic boat which I ended up getting for $4,500. The marine inspection I had done indicated it needed a belt job and a new powervalve on the carb so the price was re-negotiated.
The boat came with a snap on cover, bimini, snap in carpet, and some other goodies that I haven't inspected yet.

There doesn't seem to be ANY wood on this boat with the exception of the bolster pads, which seems to be either a quality hardwood or a synthetic material (haven't looked at it that closely but its certainly NOT plywood!) The upholstery has some mildew and some slight yellow tint, maybe from the sun or maybe from some sort of aggresive cleaner that someone used to get rid of the mildew, but that's minor as well.
The thing that was important to me was a self bailing deck with little or no wood to give me a good foundation, which is exactly what I got.

The trailer I picked up was an escort SA trailer with surge brakes which used to hold a 20' trophy cuddy cabin. The load capacity is 3000, so at 2780 I'm just under the limit. The brakes are not working properly but the frame is solid - this must be the largest SA trailer I've seen- very beefy.

Scrit9mm- I got back late last night but I'll get the tower information to you today or tomorrow. It looks pretty darn solid and appears like it can fold down and out of the way. Do you know what type of wood is used on the bolster pads or is it synthetic?

Thanks all!
It rained all day today and despite really wanting to get started with a "to do" list, I was forced to wait. I plan on getting up early (federal holiday oh boy!) tomorrow morning and getting started with a thorough cleaning. After that, I'll be sure to get some pictures up!

I am not sure what is used in the seats, I have never thought to look. Congrats on the boat!! Cant wait to see it all shined up! Does your glove box have a gap around the door or is there a weather strip there? That is the only problem that I complain about on my boat, when it rains water gets in the glove box and there is no drain in there.

I don't know- I'll have to check my glovebox. I also looked around for a stamp or manufacturer ID on the tower but couldn't seem to find anything. I'll keep looking and let you know! I did run into one issue- one of the brackets which anchors the engine compartment cover was broken. After fabricating a new one, I installed it and in doing so, accidentally cracked the fiberglass frame where the screws go into the engine cover. Not sure how I'll fix that one.....that engine cover sure is heavy.

What do you use to condition the wood on the dashboard? Teak oil?

Alright, got her cleaned up today. With the exception of a couple of scuff marks that need special attention, I think the old girl cleaned up well! Ignore the condition of the trailer....its only temporary.

hey mate fantastic buy, it looks like you'll have many years of good boating with that one. :D

any chance I could get you to do me a HUGE favour? Im currently designing a rear bench to build into my boat and im just wondering if you could take some photos of how the engine cover lifts up, how it sits and if you have to remove the seat back for access how it is fixed in?
congrats again mate it looks like a sweet boat

I am pretty sure the "wood" is a plastic of some sort. I have not seen the inside of my boat in 3.5 months. As far as the engine cover, I went to the local auto parts store and matched the length of the old risers to some new risers. They are the same that would hold up a rear gate on a suv. They work great and make it alot more easy to open. I think they were 15-20 each. I would recommend you take the mount off of the fiberglass, sand it and re-glass it, drill a pilot hole then re-attach.

Scrit9mm,
I looked all over the tower and can't find any data plates, serial numbers or manufacturing stamps, so I don't know if it originally had a sticker and it fell off or what. Its certainly not handmade but I don't have a clue where it came from. If you have any ideas as to where to look for details or if some measurements will help, let me know.
Sorry!
