I need your opinion guys. I'm looking at a 2009 2 stroke 25 yamaha that has about 40 hours or so on it. I asked the owner a bunch of questions about use and break in and he told me he ran it at 50:1 for one tank. The manual states 25:1 for the first 10 hours with fast idling for the first 10 minutes, half throttle for the next 50 minutes, then full throttle to plain and back to 3/4 throttle various times with no lengthy full throttle runs within the first 10 hours.

The owner used this motor on the same lengthy lake and river passage i do. He told me how fast the boat went with this new motor so i know he raced it. He also told me he made it to the camp in 45 minutes which is very fast. He said most of the commute was half throttle which i don't believe because he had 900lbs of gear in a 14ft boat. Basically it sounds like this motor was run hard off the bat. It looks like new, but i'm concerned about the improper break in. Should i be? The motor has a total of 5 5 gallon tanks through it, with one at 50:1, the rest at 100:1.

you will be amazed how durable that motor is.
if the compression is good then run it at 50/1.
not cause it needs it always but because it helps protect shiny internals from rust during periods of inactivity.
