Im thinking about buying a 1999 sea ray 180 with a 4.3 mercruiser. The boat needs all new seats and cushions because all the wood on them are rotten. All the carpet will need to be replaced as well as some of the wood framing that holds the bow cushions. There are a few spots on the floor that feel soft. The owner says the boat sat for a long time and thats why some of the wood is rotten. He claims he replaced the pistons, rings, and tilt pump along with a few other things. Its comes with two ss props. The trailer has an electric winch. Do you guys think this boat is worth 2,200? If not how much should I offer? The same type boat in good shape goes for around 6,000-12,000 in my area. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I just refurbished a 1994 19' except that my boat has fiberglass floors. The electric winches are garbage. I have had two of them, both of which were luckily given to me on a promo deal. Each were rated well above the weight of the boat that they were pulling and both conked out on me.

Without seeing pics and or the boat in person, I would say it is only worth it if you have the time and PATIENCE to redo everything yourself. I would make sure about the motor though because it is very risky taking people's word for it when it comes to engines.

I'd be suspicious because typically a boat gets into this kind of condition because something real expensive broke and the owner let it sit and rot instead of fixing it. It's probably rotted to the core with that kind of visible damage. Head over to the restoration section and see what you'd be getting into.

However, if the engine and drive were in excellent running condition I'd say it could be worth $1500, and if you restored it you could probably sell it for what you have in it. However if there are issues with the motor/drive then I say run run run.

This boat is not worth anything except parts. I am not exaggerating, I bet it will be $3,000 in materials (mostly the upholstry) and 100hrs of hard labor.

Find another boat unless you are a glutton for punishment.

Thank you guys for your info. I am going to be test driving it Monday and I will look through the boat a lil more then. But with your info I will most likely look for something else.

If the engine, drive, stringers, transom and hull are in good shape I would offer him $1000 to $1500 and fix it. If the stringers are shot, (which they probably are) it?s going to take many hours of work and a chunky wallet. You can save some $$ if you cut and treat the wood for the upholstery yourself and then take it to shop. The carpet can be had for cheap if you go the eBay route.
In reality, for a little more than $2200 you can buy a boat that?s ready to go to the water.
