Hi all,

1st post!

I'm looking at a 2006 stingray 250lr in nj

Boat was at an indoor warehouse during sandy and appears to be in good condition. Has the mercruiser 350 with a bravo 1 and laser ss prop

I'm planning to use this for weekend fun with wife and friends, no more than 4 - 6 people on board at any time. Doubt we will ski, but might pull a tube once in a while.

First time boat owner, but licensed pilot and motorcyclist. (Not that it means ill be good at driving a boat, but I'm pretty good with machinery.). I'm also mechanically inclined, having swapped axles, struts, water pumps, a arms, turbos, intake, on my scca racer.

I'll be keeping the boat in a slip, and not planning on towing. Dry docking in winter. Will likely do my own basic maint (water pumps, hoses, etc.)

Questions about the choice.

Is this too much boat for a 1st timer? My thinking is that because its a bowrider and the long swim platform accounts for a 2 feet of the loa that it shouldn't be too much of a bear with some training and practice.

Questions about the boat. Has about 200 hours on the motor, comes with elec trim tabs, camper canvas and was slipped in saltwater most of its life. Was well maintained by a marina, who isn't involved in the sale, but did vouch for the owners good track record with maintenance and had sold the boat to the owner. Color is white with black and the boat has bottom paint. Marina is willing to let me store over winter since the owner is paid up. Boat is winterized already, but marina and owner is willing to put it in the water for me, if I want to check ride.

Looking at the boat, the hull appears very uniform and glossy and the motor looks brand new. Also has dual battery setup. Out drive has what links like salty white patina, but seems to be I good shape with the exception of a 1/2 in piece missing from the skeg. I have the HID number but not sure what to do with it. Marina ran the motor vin for me and gave me the history which only had 1 entry for a thermostat replacement.

Given that the boat is 6 yrs old, do you think I'll need a full survey to just check the motor/drive? What might be the cost of such? Will I need one for insurance anyway? What should I look for on this type of boat? Any common problem spots?

Should I go for the check ride? I suspect if I do the ride and buy ill have to pay to rewinterize.

Finally, I think I can get his for about 20k. What do you think of the cost range? Seems in line with nada.

Any help about the brand, and my choices would be greatly appreciated.

Ps.. I'll be keeping it on a good size lake ( not a Great Lake ) that is fairly calm.

Welcome to iboats!

Stingray has a reputation for boats that are lighter than average for their size. This results in better performance at the cost of rougher riding in the heavy stuff.

At that purchase price level, have the boat checked by a professional marine surveyor, and get an on-water test. The cost of a survey is often calculated by the foot but local market conditions will prevail. Note that NADA is only a very rough estimate, and, again, local market conditions will influence what the boat is worth. Prices are on the downswing due to the season.

Take a boating course, preferably in person rather than online. That's not a terribly big boat, but it will take some time getting a feel for it. Don't go out alone; take someone who is experienced with boats. But don't take your whole family!

Any recommendations out there for a surveyor for this type of boat? Jersey shore area.

I started out with my first boat a few years ago, 21' great learning experience but ran out of room and bumped up to a 25' and couldn't be hapier. Easy to handle with the family. I think that is a great size for what you are planning. Good luck.

Welcome to iboats . . .

25 footer is OK for a first timer, considering the other stuff that you have done.

A boater safety course would be advisable.

A survey would be around $500 for this boat and will probably be needed for insurance coverage. So, get a pre-purchase survey & sea trial and you should be OK.

Stingrays are light boats, so go easy on the throttle.

The first time going out I am sure you will be a little nervous but it definately gets better every time you take the boat out. I remember the first time we went out on out first boat with my wife & 2 kids, (None of them had ever been on a small boat before) - My wife asked me where I learned to drive a boat - I said I am learning right now. ;)

I don't think you can. I think you have to be a registered owner to get on that forum.

I'm in SE PA and run ITE with SCCA. Maybe I'll see you on the water next year, in addition to the asphalt.

Good luck on the offer!

Stingray owners site is for owners only. You need the hull number to register an account

I bought my first boat new, well I had one before that it was a 1977 Glastron 19. Lasted about half a season so I consider my 2011 Stingray 215LR as my first new boat. Just a word of advice you will scratch, ding and dent her. Since you will be slipping her it may not happen as often as would be if taking on and off a trailer every time. I have a little chunk missing from my skeg, it is very common, you can get a stainless steel skeg guard for about $100 which should cover any small chips. Also since you are going to slip it you may want to take advantage and put it on the next time the boat is out (if you decide to buy it)

Just some advice from one first time boater to the next. Leave a tool set, extra prop, extra transom plugs on the boat and spend the $100 at Home Depot for a portable jump pack, you will be wising you did the first time you are stuck because your battery was dead. Speaking of that with the age of the boat I would be thinking about replacing the battery if not done already.

As for stingray. I am pretty happy with mine. The only issues I have had were minor things like a few screws coming loose on the bimini top. The MB Quart radio died in my boat this summer, I got a new unit off of ebay for about $100. If I had to pick something to complain about it would be the boat is a bit plane but I could have paid 15K more for a sexy Sea Ray. I'll take plane and save the money.

I think the price is fine. 200 hours is nothing. Most people I know do about 80-100 a season.

Thanks agallant80. Sounds like motorcycles..... It's not a matter of if you'll wipe out, but when you'll wipe out!

This one has a 1 year old dual battery setup but I'll heed your advice with the jump pack, as I'm a belt and suspenders kind of guy when it comes to safety.

Great idea with the extra transom plugs, as I hadn't thought about that!

Hey friscoboater,

Thanks for asking. Just heard back on the 1st offer and was a bit low for the owner as he's paid up already for the storage and winterizing. I've found a couple more candidates nearby (240lr and another 250lr) in the same range, one with a 350 and bravo 3 that I'm looking at this weekend. If neither of these measure up to the same price/value, I'll make a last and final to the owner.
