Have you sea trialed one of these boats yet? You just want to be sure you like how it rides, handles, performs, etc to make sure you are looking at the right make/model that "fits" you.

Hey Lk

We did get out on a few boats when they were still in the water before winter. (Searay 240 sundeck, Tahoe q5 and q7' stingray 190, 220cs, 240lr, glastron 20' plus a pontoon and tritoon). I may be too new to notice the differences, but most of the cruisers were pretty similar, with the smaller boats and toons being more susceptible to wind/waves. We decided we wanted a bit more room and an open bow to help with docking/boarding since we're new to boating. I also wanted something with a reliable and solid engine with enough torque so that I'm not at higher rpm and making tons of noise just to get moving. So 5-7 yrs old bowrider, enclosed head, common injected v8 and in the 24 25 foot range became the target, given my budget. A deck boat might be a better practical choice, but I like the look of the bow rider better.

The wife and I like how the stingrays in that size seem to have a deeper interior and I like the prices compared to the sea rays, regals, etc in that size. We did see an 04 crownline that was a beauty, but the asking price was twice as much so we didn't ask to get a ride. Same thing with a newer regal 26 footer. (Compared to cars, I like the Lexus cars, but can certainly live with the Camry at half the price).

On the lakes and rivers near my home, it's almost exclusively bow riders / deckboats and pontoons in second, followed by smaller cuddies and Cabin cruisers. There is a wooden boat club too on the lake, but that looks like more worry than I'd like to deal with. Several folks trailer jet skis or small bass boats.

On the ocean side it's mainly cruisers and yachts.

But we settled on these boats because we're a mile from a fairly calm lake and won't be overnighting or trailering and we wanted an enclosed head. For us, it's more about being on the water with friends than how fast or how agile. We also didn't want a labor of love, since I have that going with my car already.;)

I would get the survey done.

My experience is the survey will only cover the boat and will not cover the engines, steering, electrical, drivetrain. I think you find some good feedback in the engine section of what to have checked by mechanic or dealer for engines.

One thing for sure this is the correct place for information and sage advice.

I'm more than convinced on the survey and sea trial. Peace of mind and needing it for insurance are enough to convince me.

Friscoboaters signature links, however scared the hell out of me and sealed the deal!

My first boat was/is a 20' Stingray LX. As others have said, they are lighter than many boats and have decent performance. I boat on the Chesapeake Bay and when the water gets rough, I get pushed around more than most. But not impossible to handle.

These boats respond well to Smart Tabs. Mine is also very sensitive to trim inputs. I usually set the trim in a sweet spot I've found and only make minor changes from there as needed.

I've had typical minor problems expected from a boat with a few years (I have a 2004). The only significant problem I've had is with the Volvo fuel cell, but that's not a Stingray problem.

I was originally planning on a 23' - 25' boat as my first boat. I'm kinda glad I have this size though as an intro to boating. It's been a little easier on my wallet with gas prices.

Thanks for all the great advice guys!

Looked at the other boats too and one was a couple of years older, but had fresh paint, freshwater only and the bravo III outdrive.

I'm headed to the NYC boat show next weekend just to see what's out there in the 'new' category before I make the next offer. Anyone else going?

Other boats looked at, went to the show, got my safety cert. and the last offer was accepted... Now for the surveys!

I've searched the forums and found that John Spencer and a gentleman known as 'Dunk' are both good. I'll be reaching out to them to see if one of them is available.

gn85,

Thanks for the info. This one has the lenco tabs installed, so I hope they're operational and it helps with the trim. The lenco auto glide system looks interesting as an add on. (I need to stop lookin' at the internet... I'm thinking about accessories for a boat I don't even own yet and have never driven :) )
