I need a new outboard. Something around 10 (9.9) or so. I run every kind of water from small streams where I often have to get out and pull to the Mississippi.

I've looked at Merc / Suzuki and Yamaha. Merc is quite a bit cheaper. Suzuki is in the middle. Yamaha's are very high. What are you guys thoughts and opinions?

Hello and welcome to iboats first you should post your question ones having multiple post for the same question is not cool second the best outboard is the one you can afford:D as long as you maintain and service it it will be there for you when you need it I personally like Tohatsu

I would put it to you this way.Are you wanting to buy a new motor or a used motor. Next do you want a two stroke or four stroke motor? For my money I would look for a used J-rude, Or merc 2 stroke, not knowing the boat you want to put it on. 2 strokes are a lot lighter than the four strokes. So I like to keep the motor on a diet.

My poll puts the JohnnyRudes out in the front as far as popularity.
It would be helpful to know what you are going to put it on.
For a general purpose motor, I would strongly consider a 4 stroke.
Personally, I'm a 2-stroke Merc man. I've had many over the past 4 decades - not a bum in the lot. But, many can say the same about Johnson or Evinrude too. I noticed this summer about half the O/Bs on my creek are Yammies (which prompted my poll).
Any of them will provide you a long life as long as you take care of it.
The last new Merc I bought had an optional 5 year warranty for a mere $100. It covered everything including breaking the motor in two if you hit a rock.
Something else for you to consider as I am not familiar with any of the latest warranties.
