Re: Looking for a used Cadillac
I say run. These cars do not age well at all. Just like others have mentioned, the lower crankcase seals leak untill the latest tsb to use grey
gm silicone is followed. Also the main cap bolts sometimes strip threads, or
break and must be drilled when doing this repair. so untill it is apart, you won't know the real cost. Head gasket failures and head bolts pulling threads from the block happens frequently as well. Again, using time serts is almost always reccomended if 1 bolt pulls threads. There is nothing worse than reassembleing the engine and the last head bolt stripps out. Then a new gasket and bolts, as well as all new thread inserts are needed. The other expensive problem with these vehicles is torque converter clutch codes. The seals in the channel plate are not very robust and leak. Even if the ses lamp is not on, on a long trip, the computer will see the slip and turn it on. The repair involves partial disassembly, and usually a new torque converter depending on how much slip has occurred. Then there is the servie ride control message problems, blower motors, heated seat elements burning out, Catalytic converter failures from cold start misfires from leaking fuel pressure regulators. Backfire valves causing intake leaks, valve cover leaks allowing oil in the spark plug tubes, the water crossover seals leaking, throwing water pump belts, and overheating. I just put them very near the bottom in reliability and cost of ownership. They do look cool and ride nice.
