Looking for a 2000-2002-ish Seville or De Ville. I see them in the $3000 range with fairly low mileage.

I know the Northstars like to drink oil, anyone have any more info to look out for?

I know with the Seville, the STS is a bit mroe sporty than the SLS, and they have 25 more HP, but the SLS has higher torque and better gearing for MPG's.

It's worth it to look in a Florida zip code on CL since many of the people down there are driving them.

Good point Bob. Probably some low mileage cars too.

I thought it was required to be over 60 years old to buy those! You qualify? :)

Oh come on Bruce, an STS would be badass. Now a Deville? Scott, there's no excuse for that.

Like most Caddies it has a badly designed V8 that is a bear to service in addition to the known headgasket, head stud and bed plate oil leak problems and its propensity to drink oil most of those "bargain" ten year old rides are to be avoided IMO.

If you can get a Caddie with a Chevy V8 you'll be miles ahead from a 305 Fleetwood to a LSX powered CTS-V.

Not for 16 years and some change.

STS or DTS. I think the 2000 and up De Villes actually look pretty slick.

Awesome but I have my hotrods already. I need a car that can haul people around for my tenant placement business. I want a V8, and I want ok fuel economy. I am 260lbs. and need some room. My Ram 2500 is killing me driving around Baltimore every day.

So the Northstars are junk?
I'm interested in the 2000-2002 because they are dirt cheap.
Maybe there's a reason for that aye?

The Northstar is known for it's issue's but I'm a used car dealer and have
bought and sold several with 100K and have not had any major problems.
Because we do "buy here pay here" if their are problems I will know.

When looking at one to buy the first thing I do is get down on my hands
and knee's and look under the front of the car. If it's covered in oil I walk
away. Also basic checks, coolant and engine oil levels.

Their are some good one's out there you just have to invest the time to
find them. If you buy one for 3K that goes two or three years with no major
issue's it's all good. Nice cars when they work. :)

Re: Looking for a used Cadillac

I love the last Eldorados. The ETC's make mine about an 00 in pearl white. Such a sweet car but I cant forget the bad motors.
Definitely are some good ones out there and of course many bad. IMO the cars do not age well in the rust belt and many are neglected.
Some are taken care of beautifully and are great cars in great shape, usually higher priced. $3000 dont buy a whole lot of good Caddy round here.

The engine has many good features but the main problem is in the long block and its design. The bed plate with high pressure oil feeding the mains is prone to leaks and is a MAJOR job and the head studs are prone to pulling from the block another catastrophic failure. Lets not forget the dexcool in many of these cars was willfully neglected by General Motors and has rotted many of these engines from the inside out.

Ford designed the exact same engine around the exact same time and wow what a difference a design makes. :)
I guess make my 00 ETC a 98 Lincoln Mark VIII in Pearl and I'll be good to go, sadly the car would never work for me here and I'll never have the pleasure.

Good luck in your search.

Maybe a nice Continental for ya ? Good motor.

Only thing I know about these cars is MAKE SURE THE CEL IS NOT ON. I know a doctor who spent a fortune at a caddy dealer trying to solve the mystery as why the CEL was on only to have it happen again in a few months..Beware

Re: Looking for a used Cadillac

I say run. These cars do not age well at all. Just like others have mentioned, the lower crankcase seals leak untill the latest tsb to use grey
gm silicone is followed. Also the main cap bolts sometimes strip threads, or
break and must be drilled when doing this repair. so untill it is apart, you won't know the real cost. Head gasket failures and head bolts pulling threads from the block happens frequently as well. Again, using time serts is almost always reccomended if 1 bolt pulls threads. There is nothing worse than reassembleing the engine and the last head bolt stripps out. Then a new gasket and bolts, as well as all new thread inserts are needed. The other expensive problem with these vehicles is torque converter clutch codes. The seals in the channel plate are not very robust and leak. Even if the ses lamp is not on, on a long trip, the computer will see the slip and turn it on. The repair involves partial disassembly, and usually a new torque converter depending on how much slip has occurred. Then there is the servie ride control message problems, blower motors, heated seat elements burning out, Catalytic converter failures from cold start misfires from leaking fuel pressure regulators. Backfire valves causing intake leaks, valve cover leaks allowing oil in the spark plug tubes, the water crossover seals leaking, throwing water pump belts, and overheating. I just put them very near the bottom in reliability and cost of ownership. They do look cool and ride nice.

Re: Looking for a used Cadillac

2004 is a better year for sure. They still have the same transmission concerns. p0741 tcc stuck off, and the 3rd clutch housing bushing wear causing the left axle seal to leak over and over. Fuel pressure regulator and converter durability, and I believe they switched to coil on plug which were not very reliable, and the continuous coolant loss from the water pump housing/crossover and the coolant nipple. Not to mention the crankcase lower half leaks were never actually fixed in production. Even the 4.6 northstars in the 2010 vehicles do not have the oil distribution plate sealed at the factory following the tsb. They still use the small side gaskets that have always leaked. Good luck, if you find one and post the VIN, I will check it out for you.
