Re: Looking for an air compressor

Thanks everyone.

I know all about water in air. The 3 rotory screw compressors we run at work also use a 1000 gallon reciever along with a 2 stage 500 gallon Dryer which all have auto blowdowns for condensate. These 3 are also piped together and are run through a sequencer so that one runs lead and the other two run lag until demand is such that 2 will run loaded at the same time.

I understand how around here at times it gets easy to spend other peoples money. Sure I would love to have a 10hp 2 stage Champion with a 120 gallon tank sitting in the garage but it just aint gonna happen. Unless you all want to chip in to help pay for it!

Next it's funny because as soon as I arrived at work last night I found out that our new, less than 4 months old, 5hp oilless compressor just went up in smoke! Maybe I can get them to give me the receiver tank, hummmmm!

For a gun set I found at TPC Global a 10 pcs. kit that contains a 1.8, 1.4 and a 1.0 mini gun, a regulator, inline filter, cleaning kit and a gun stand for about $84.00 Looks like just the price of the 2 guns is about $76.00 So I think I'm going to order one and see what happens. I feel it should be a good starting point for a newb! I mean what the heck if I can put down a decent coat with these it should only get better if I upgrade later.

I think you made a few good choices. The TPC Global set is not a bad set. The 1.8mm gun is for primers, the 1.4mm gun is for base coats and clear coats and even single stage paints. The 1.0mm gun is a touch up gun but it does spray very good finishes with single stage, base coat and clear coat paints as well. But it won’t spray primer very well, just a heads up on that. That set also has repair kits available and is so much better than the HF cheapies... I think you will enjoy the finishes you can get with those guns. Just use a drier between the compressor and your gun and spray away… Also Post pictures for everybody to see your results. I know I would love to see them… And if you don't remember anything else about painting, prep IS the number one issue with any paint finish. The better the prep, the better the finish...

Re: Looking for an air compressor

Thanks gm,

I showed that kit to the wife when she got home yesterday and she even thought it was the best idea of all the guns I showed her. So I got one ordered and I pick up the new used compressor on Saturday. Will certainly post up some test pictures and will probably have questions on adjustments as I go a long.

It does pay to research, read, watch and ask questions doesn't it! Can't wait to get started and see what kind of technic I have.

One more question if you can answer this about these guns. Do these have a 2 position trigger?

Re: Looking for an air compressor

Just got back from picking up the new used compressor. It's an old Sears Craftsman dated 1981 with a DeVilbiss 2 cylinder belt drive with only an 11 gallon tank. Specs say 9.6cfm displacement, 7.2cfm @ 40lbs and 6.4 @ 90lbs. From a zero pressure state to shut off is about 3 min. though I didn't time it. Pressure regulator looks to be 100psi off/85psi on. Recovery time is very quick and this thing is very quiet!
There seems to be a small leak somewhere as it loses 5lbs in about 20 min. so I will have to really go through it tomorrow when I finaly get a day off.

Also the spray guns arrived yesterday but I haven't had time to really look at them so I'll update as soon as I do.
