Looking for info on MARK 10

I have the opportunity to purchase a Mercury Mark 10 (late 50's I think). It is an 'as is' motor that is missing some lower unit parts (he is unsure of specifics). He wants $25obo and claims that it has compression.

I'm just looking for more info on these motors and if parts would be readily available.

Anybody know a good running condition value of this motor?

Would it be better to try and find parts and get running or part out?

Parts are NOT readily available. Most folks would only buy one if they REALLY were into a restoration project.

Yeah will have a hard time finding Parts. But for 25 bucks, there are guys looking for parts on ebay. could be worth your time parted out.

The mark 10 is a totally cool motor. However, at least equal to its neatness, is its capacity to infuriate you when trying to work on it. I'd have a better chance of rebuilding a jet turbine with a butter knife and a box of cracker jacks than to be able to change the water pump impeller on a mark 10 with my whole shop full of tools. A merc mark 10 is NOT a motor for anyone other than an old mercury expert. I would love to own one------that someone else restored!!!!

How much do you think I could part it out for? (without some missing lower unit parts)

Re: Looking for info on MARK 10

As noted above, the Mark 10 isn't a great motor to use as a starter project. The lower unit requires some special tools that are hard to find. If you're really handy, you might be able to make up some tools that would work. An OEM manual is a MUST on these beasties, as their lower unit complexity is second to none. Parts and manuals can be had at www.oldmercs.com.

The powerheads are actually fairly simple and relatively easy to work on. Ignition and fuel system parts are readily available. They're strong motors when done - they run well and the automatic transmission is actually kinda neat when it works...

Re: Looking for info on MARK 10

There is lots of friendly help on this site, and some real mercury experts like Chinewalker, Laddies, and Faztbullet just to name a few. They are always patient and willing to help. I believe there is a thread on this forum that dealt with changing the water pump on a mark 10, and I believe a young feller about 15yrs. old succeeded in doing it by making his own tools to do the job. SO.....it can be done. I however, do NOT know how or I'd be glad to tell you. The water pump is in a cartridge in the mid section is about as far as I can tell you because it's as far as I got. You have to have a special tool to reach down there to get to it. You can't get to it from the bottom.
If you are truly interested on working on such an old motor that requires special tools, you should treat yourself to the aomci.org website, which has a free "ask-a-member" section with guys that I know for sure have done this job many times. It is not easy, and in the past I hear there were men that made a lot of spare dough by almost exclusively putting water pumps in these engines.
