I did't notice that, good point. In fact I had put my extinguisher at the back of my boat then realized if the engine was ablaze I wouldn't want to get that close to the OB and gas tank if it was on fire. I think if my boat was on fire the first thing I would do is jump over board. It would have to happen to see how one reacts I guess. Many a "safety man" standing by on a job at our plant ran away when the stuff hit the fan. You never know until it happens.

A red extinguisher isn't legal here in Ontario if the vessel requires one. Only required if you have a fixed tank. It has to be white which is marine approved. You can have as many red units you wish but need a white one.

I did not know he red ones were illegal. I have a white one in the engine bay and a red one at the helm?

At least here in the States, the color doesn't matter. It has to be USCG approved, which is marked on the label, nothing to do with the color.

And as I said a couple of posts above,......"Yep,... That is a fully automatic extinguisher, no need to get to it and no need to open the engine compartment. --- Better than a hand held extinguisher."

Like you I am in Ontario. So what you are saying, if I have a red extinguisher it illegal even if I have the white one as well? If so I will get rid of the red one.

No, no. You misunderstood me. You are required to have a white Transport Canada approved marine extinguisher on board if your boat has a fixed tank. As long as you have a white one you can have as many red ones you want.

Sorry to leave everyone hanging. I had a very long day with the seatrial and long drive home, which was made longer by my new 22' friend tagging along behind me.

In the pic provided, what looks like cracks in the repair is just some surface scratches above repair and there is not blistering in the hull it is all water drops. The pics are deceiving.

The fire extinguisher in the engine bay is indeed automatic.

So the issue I had while driving home is literally watching my gas needle drop as I drove. I knew my mpg would suffer, but not like this. As brought up by a few people on a separate thread, the boat is not sitting right on the trailer. The boat is too far forward which is causing the weight to be unbalanced and shift forward. This puts way too much weight on the tongue and drags my car down. It also puts most of the load on the front axle of the trailer and little on the back axle. The bow of the boat is sitting too close to the ground as well (related). The only fix that I see is to move the trailer upright that holds the winch and where the boat sits (what is that called?) back. The question I have in regards to that is, is it ok to move that. It looks like it is made to be moved, but right now it is sandwiched on either side of where all of the joints come together and if I move it it will not be. Does that make sense? I will try to post pics in a minute.

Congratulations on your new find.

Too much weight on your tongue shouldn't affect your mpg. Your car isn't really going up hill all the time, only looks like it.

You could shift the boat back some if you can make it fit the trailer properly. Better yet, add an equalizing hitch or beef up your tow vehicle suspension. I added air springs with an on board compressor and really like that set up. It can add up to 5000 lbs lift by just pushing buttons. We get lazier as we get older.

Sorry about that Sir. I get tunnel vision when I'm asked a question. I guess a PM would have sufficed. However the red fire extinguishers issue was brought up earlier. If there is a monetary penalty I'm sure I won't be paying it anytime soon. Relax Sir.

I guess you pulled the trigger if you towed it home. Congrats Danny.

I'm not getting you with the trailer issue. The boat must be tight to the trailer mast roller as shown. You towed this tandem trailer with a car? If you did the trailer receiver and the cars ball most likely were not dead level. That would be a problem besides a car trying to pull a big boat. No wonder you burned gas.

Congrats on the new to you boat.

Before you move the winch tower, I'd suggest you fond out what the tongue weight is now and confirm you have room to move the boat back on the trailers bunks (or is it a roller trailer?) at the transom.

The forward lean of the dual axle shackle does suggest too much weight forward. But too far back or unsupported at the transom is also a problem.

If you have 6in +/- of rearward adjustment of how the boat sits on the trailer bunks now, you can probably move the winch post to be sitting behind that frame union its bridging now. May have to readjust all the keel rollers and bunks to be fully supporting the hull when you move it.

For some reason I am having problems with the site tonight. I didn't see you had a Tahoe pulling it and can't edit. Once you get the tongue and ball balanced you shouldn't have any problems towing. I can't feel my 3000 lb boat behind my Silverado so with that nice tandem trailer you shouldn't even fell it once balanced. Now show us the new barge!!

As JB said it's important to find out the current tongue weight.
Also, it might be possible to move the axles forward if you can't easily move the boat back, if needed.
Do you know the total weight of trailer and boat?

Looks like maybe your hitch could be too low on the Tahoe, the balancer is definitely unbalanced and you are lucky you didn't blow the front set of tires on the trailer. As for the mileage, a 5.3 isn't exactly a powerhouse and a 22 ft boat isn't exactly light ;)

What MPG are you seeing? When I pull my boat behind my '03 Escalade ESV I normally see high 10 mpg and that has a 6.0. I was driving into a head wind one windy day and it was at 9mpg. Not knowing how much different your boat weighs than mine, I wouldn't expect you to see better mpg than me.
