So I had purchased a 18' starcraft holiday last year on the 4th of july and absolutely loved it. it was spacious, comfortable, and it was a starcraft tin boat! well budget got involved and fishing with only 2 people onboard in inland lakes and it was just WAY more boat than I needed and started to drain the pocket book. so I sold it and picked up a 1989 supergamefisher 12' from a relative. I have found that it is a little on the small side for even trolling 2 people. So NOW I am selling the 12er! When trolling we don't do the my rod your rod deal we set out max rods legal and rotate, once a fish is hooked you reel it in then get to drive until the other gets a fish. This seems to make the day much more interesting. SO I now am looking at picking up this 14' starcraft, From what I have read It looks to be a late 60's falcon due to the size and color. with what looks to be a 68 mercury 35hp. has 4 rod holders and a fish finder. Can anyone else see anything that I need to look at closely upon inspection this coming Saturday? I am meeting the guy half way since it is about 100 miles and we are working out a trade for a atv? I do realize it will need some freshening but hope to fish it the rest of the summer the it is going to spend the winter in the garage at home instead of my other expensive hobby (my truck). Up until last night I was slightly concerned about the cable and pulley steering that these came with factory. but now I'm a little more at ease, However will likely upgrade this winter to mechanical steering. I also threw in a pic of my last rig

Re: looking for some photo detective work.

Well, its gonna be getter than the 12' for sure.

If the motor checks out, then the only other real concern is the transom. Make sure it is solid and not flexing.

Looks like the trailer may need a little work.

Certainly would be a good idea to get the motor supported better for transport. Seeing the strap going to it makes me wonder a little.

The rod holders are mounted kind of strangely.

You'll have a little wind protection for the cooler days with that windshield.

Looks like a nice little rig if it suits your needs. Go for it.

Re: looking for some photo detective work.

Thanks.

I was kinda wondering about the rod holders. Wondering why they were mounted to the and just not to the rails. On my small boat they are mounted a little low and make it hard to get the holder in and spin it the 180deg to lock it in. As for the transom, I am sorta expecting to have to replace it. along with the floor. and seats. The quad I am trading for is a older Honda TRX125. He is asking 900 for everything and I have the quad for 750 but he is willing to trade straight up. the bike is not perfect So I don't expect the boat to be either but the quad is ridable and reliable and would like the boat to be. I would like to build a bench seat back into it there for a little more storage and eliminate the pedestal seats. I still have the transom saver from the big boat that will hopefully work on the smaller boat. I'm willing to bet he has the strap to keep the motor from flopping back and forth. I Really hope the trailer is up to making the 100 mile trip from his house to mine! of course when it will fail is just after I get it. Thinking I will bring a grease gun with a needle greaser. pull the caps and add as much as I can before it go's any further. Then a full service once home. as for rebuilding it. I am fully capable of fixing the trailer up so long as there is solid metal somewhere on it otherwise I can build or buy a different trailer in the future. I will be most of the time trolling 2 but would like the capabilities to troll 3 people max and possiably tow a tube on a very rare occasion. Other scenario would be take the wife and youngster out and troll (even tho i'll be the only one fishing) I really like what Jasonoutside did to his JET but wonder if it will make much of a difference in space on this boat. going for Bare bones but all the fixins to make a good fisher.

hahaha All the tools needed I carry in my truck at all times. nothing like breaking down 50+ miles from the nearest paved road 6 miles into 3+ feet if snow, never mind Distance to civilization. good point on picking up a bearing set... Might as well pick up two and then I will have them ready for the "servicing" anyhow. looks like it will run me bout 24$ for both sides. A little unsure however if I will need 1", 1-1/16" or 1-3/8".........Think I might just take my chances with the grease gun pumping her full. If it breaks down on me i'll be within 50 miles and have to run home to grab the car hauler as long hope I wont kill a bus full of nuns. unless someone can tell me size by looks at a picture???

And to keep the photo hawks happy I'm not stretching how far out I take the rig

and ya allways have to be prepared for the OTHER guy when he breaks and has no tools.

When I got my tinny, I repacked the bearing in an Autozone parking lot about 2 miles from the seller. They needed it.

and that might be the case. here as well. maybe i'll pick up a set of each and return the incorrect one's when I get back just in case. There isn't a whole lot between me and the meeting point aside from the a couple old gas/ convenience stores

Better pack a samwich or 3 if it's that remote a pickup/transfer. Travel safe, bearings & all.

Re: looking for some photo detective work.

picked up two bearing and race sets. will try and make it home with a little added grease but have parts as backup. Our boating season is fairly short up here. As they say 9 months of winter and 3 months of road repair. Saying my prayers at night that this wont need a complete overhaul right out of the gate and can limp it thru the rest of summer. Really itching to get back onto the water. this 12er with no more motor is NO FUN. After I get a usable boat secured at my house will look for a small outboard to throw on the 12er and put up for sale. Boats with motors are more appealing to people than a boat that needs a motor even at a severly diccounted price.

as for the remote pickup...Its not THAT remote. going to just outside of alberta Mi home of home of the many Ford Motor Company wood mills. This can be seen when passing thru on highway 41 on the way to Houghton
