Re: Looking for tow vehicle

Thanks guys for your help. I think I will stay with the Escape and see what happens. I'm very careful with the transmission. On long grades I shift into 2nd and just run slower. Revs the engine about 4500 rpm which is fine. I also stay out of overdrive and run no faster than 60 mph. Anyway I'll give it a try. If the tranny blows Ill fix it and move on to another tow vehicle.

Re: Looking for tow vehicle

My weekly drive to the lake is only 5 miles on flat roads, not a problem. But 3 or 4 times a year I trailer 300 miles one way to the Sierra mountains in California. One grade out of the town of Bishop is about 5 miles at 6% grade from an altitude of 4,000' to 7,000'. At times it could be 100 degrees at the bottom, 80 at the top. This is where I would drive 45 or 50 mph in second gear hopefully to help the transmission.

Add an auxiliary cooler and stay away from fluid flushes. Change the fluid and filter.

For only one long trip, why not rent a tow vehicle? Sure the rental is expensive BUT-- It is only one time and there is no big cash lay-out for another vehicle. Plus, No worry about breaking down and certainly no repair costs.

Sounds like you're perfectly satisfied with what you have.

Stick with it.

Agree on this. Always change the fluid and filter. Make sure your shop gets as much oil out of the torque converter as possible. The torque converter may hold a couple of quarts of contaminated oil that will pollute your fresh new oil. Auxiliary cooler is a must as heat is what will kill your transmission more than anything else.
