I'm looking to rebuild my 70hp. I bought the boat last year and only tested it once for about 15 minutes before the alarm went off. I was wrapped up in a large home improvement project and was unable to work on the motor. Well, it's getting to be that time of year again, and I want to start out on the right foot. My problem is that I don't have a manual for the motor, and worse yet, the decals are missing from the mounting plate and I don't know what year the motor is. I was told it was a 1991. Is there any other way of finding out, or, is there a manual that I can get that will cover all 70hp? I would also consider purchasing another motor if anyone is looking to sell.

All help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Looking to rebuild

Before you rebuild do compression check. Do you know why it alarmed. Could be possible overheat or low oil level. If compression checks out okay it would be a waste of time and money to rebuild. Just my 2 cents. :)

Don't sell that puppy just yet. If it has not been rebuilt there is a good chance that the model number is stamped on the freeze plug. It will be on the block and about the size of a quarter. It may be painted & if so you might have to scrape the paint off to read it. Post the number back here & someone will decode it for you.

When you get the model number order an OMC manual specific for your motor rather than one of the gererics. Try here:

http://www.theoutboardwizard.bizhosting.com/parts_service_and_owners_manuals.html

Re: Looking to rebuild

Thanks for the info. I do intend to do a compression test first. I have a buddy of mine that is very knowledgeable in outboards. I have been used to I/O's for the last 7 years, and, don't know anything about an outboard. I'll check for the stamp on the plug for the ID markings and post them soon. It's good to know there are folks like you guys out there helping out poor schlumps like me ! Thanks again!

How many side plates are there over the exhaust area? (Port side) 1 or 3?

Cool. Thats the 56 cid motor. They started in 1986 but havent really changed a lot since then. A 1991 manual would give you all the info you need to rebuild it.

Thank you so much for the info. This helps a great deal. Do you happen to know if the service manuals are offerd on a CD ROM?
