Ok so i was having problems with my ignition system checked the points and they were pitted pretty good so i bought a new set of points from advanced and after settting the gap o idk about 25 times i cant get it to run even as good as it did before. My motor is a 1990 230a. So i set the points between .016-.020 runs and idles real good at .020 for about 2 min at WOT then dies off and starts popping so i go to neutral and let set for 10-15 sec open it back up same thing over and over at .016 it idles but its a little rough and then i open it up acts like its gonna go then gets to 10-15 MPH and falls on its face but its constant . so i think it would be best if i get rid of the points but have no idea where to find an electronic ignition system for my motor????Any help on these problems would be great. Thanks

I second the Pertronix. It will start better, idle better, and never have to mess with points adjustments again.

I put one on my Maverick six or seven years ago and have never looked back!

Did you put a dwell meter on it? Or just go by the gap? Setting the gap is just a starting point. You should use a dwell meter to check the dwell angle or percentage. Once that is correct (changing the gap is how to adjust dwell) then the timing must be reset.

Here is a good example for why I went pertronix. This sounds sorta detailed and difficult (relatively).

Pertronix, you remove the points and wire from inside the distributor, screw in the pertronix module (2 or 3 screws, I don't remember which) and slide the magnetic pickup over the top where the rotor went. If I recall correctly, the kit came with a plastic "feeler gauge", which looked to me like the red plastic stick they put in kids' cheese and cracker lunch snacks. Stick that between the two magnetic pickups, adjust til it fits, and tighten screws. Run two wires to coil.

You will never have to adjust or mess with it again. No parts to wear, no special tools, and takes about 15 minutes to install.

Use a dwell meter and set your points with that. Then adjust timing as the dwell affects the timing. When points are set correctly they perform just as well as a pertronix set up.
