looper engine assembly-question?

I,m putting together a 130hp johnson looper{2000}the manual says a special tool{fixture] is needed to hold rod cap in place while your torque the rod bolts.Can you do without it or should I get it{I bet its big bucks}<br /> Thanks anyone

Do it by hand. Its way more accurate. We noticed the cap could possibly be mis-aligned using the tool. I gave it to a rebuilder buddy and he found the same thing.<br /><br />Good luck!

I use the "finger nail" method. If my finger nail hangs on the two mated edges then I re-align them. Also, just in case you don't know. The rod caps are "Broken" from the rod during manufacturing. So each cap will only fit its matched rod and only in the right orientation.

Not that im in any way an expert at this for sure but 15 yrs ago I rebuilt a 70 hp by the book and the method the book showed was to use a dental pick. -drag it across the seam(rod cap) and you should (not) feel the seam if you do you should realign and try again, sometimes it takes awhile but it is very important !!!!!!!! I found it to be the hardest part of the rebuild.(the machine shop does all the technical work) we just assemble and disassemble hope this helps you it did for me my 70 hp motor is still running good after all this time.
