Looper or crossflow, prop or engine HP rating

I've been reading lots of posts (every one I can find) about this 1985 90 HP and I know this year was right on the edge for these two changes. Can the experts tell me, is it a looper or crossflow and how was it HP rated, at the prop or at the engine?

I was thinking it was a crossflow and then I read some old OMC brochures from 1985 that said the V-4's and V-6's were loopers in '85, and now I'm confused.

Is there a way to tell just by looking at the outside of the motor?

The only looper V4s in 1985 were the 120 and 140. Yours is a crossflow, rated at the propeller.

Thanks CW. I did a Seafoam decarb, carb rebuild with Sierra kits, new Sierra fuel pump, new water pump, new Champion plugs, running Pennzoil semi-syn TCW-3, got her propped to run at about 5600 WOT. Is there anything else to do now to keep this old girl happy and healthy? It didn't run for about 5 years and I got it cheap, so I'm OK with putting a couple of bucks in it now to keep it together. The boat is running perfect, I'd really like to keep it that way for a while so I'm looking for any tips.

I just had my '81 completely gone over by a real guru of a mechanic. He did everything you mentioned plus he recommended I replace the thermostats. He also changed the lower unit oil. Love my motor. Pushes my 18' Starcraft to 40MPH.

It's best to store the motor in the running position, not tilted. When not in use, grease and fully withdraw the trim rams on your PT&T. Also grease the steering arm and then turn the motor so that the rod is withdrawn.

Thanks guys, I did change the lower unit oil too, and I thought about changing the stats, but that housing looks like a tremendous pain to get to. I bought a laser thermometer and after putting in the new pump I ran it hard for about 5 minutes and pulled the cover off, every surface was between 125 and 145 degrees F sitting there idling in the 75 degree water. I think I'll do the stats and deflectors for a winter project, along with rebuilding the T/T pump assy. The T/T works but sounds like it has a box of rocks rattling around inside it.

I have a factory manual but it is not the EXACT manual. I bought the motor thinking it was a 1990 and bought a 1990 manual. I will get the 1985 manual before I tackle the T/T motor.

Your running water temps look normal.
