what is the difference between a loop system and a crossflow. I have a 1986 evinrude and i am not sure what i have. I don't know if they are even part of the same motor. Someone please advise me on this. I got engine numbers if you need them. Thanks

Howdy Shaun.

The differences are many. The short version is that crossflow engines have a deflector cast into the piston to deflect the incoming charge up to the combustion chamber and loopers have a flat-top piston and use two intake charges to deflect each other up.

:)

Re: Looper or Crossflow

Hi, Shaun.

Crossflow seems to work better in small engines and low speeds. Most engines under about 8hp are still crossflow.

Big engines are mainly loopers now. They are lighter, make more horses per cubic inch, and use less fuel.

:)
