Need a little help here please. I was installing my 85 120 johnson on my boat this weekend and noticed there is some play in the engine. The looseness appears to be in between the tube the steering cable goes into and the clamp that bolts to the transom. In other words, I can lift up on the skeg of the engine and it wobbles in that tube/clamp area almost as if a bushing or something is missing. What do I need to do to fix this? I tried looking up the part but didn't see it in any diagrams. J120TLCOS

Thanks

http://shop.evinrude.com/ Well that certainly is a different question. Around here (salt water) the opposite would be true. They get so tight you can't get them apart.

Anyhoo, you are saying the tilt tube is loose in the stern brackets, right? Or is it loose in the swivel bracket?

I guess it depends on just how loose is loose. The tilt tube just slides through the stern brackets with no bushings. But there are bushings where it slides through the swivel bracket. The nuts should be tight but not so tight so as to bind it up.

I sort of doubt you have a problem unless it is grossly loose. If you are concerned enough you can probably support the engine on a hoist and slide the tilt tube out and check for wear.
