Rcobb..... The plug wire marked "UP" goes to the upper plug (top plug). The head gasket must absolutely be perfect, so purchase one from your local Evinrude/Johnson dealer, or possibly NAPA. OMC original part number 306204, superceeded to part number 329103, cost about $15.00. If you can't locate one, I have a few left in stock.

Purchase a manual (see the bottom left of this page) so that you will have a general idea of what you're doing. Guess work can cost you many $$$$$$.

1 - It's best to have the throttle handle wide open to start, after which lower the rpms to a normal range.

2 - The pistons will be close to top dead center when the points open

3 - The head gasket question.... you can not start or run a engine with a faulty head gasket. Replace it. NOTE... Cyl head bolt torque is 80 INCH lbs.

4 - Timing..... Have the flywheel key aligned with the fiber contact portion of the points, then set the points to .020. That's all you need to do to set the timing. NOTE... the flywheel nut torque is 45 FOOT lbs.

After the length of time that engine's been sitting, if you haven't rebuilt the carburetor, I strongly suggest you do that... but get a manual first.

Thanks Joe,

Will let you know about head gasket purchase, will check first locally.

One more question, the rim of the cylinder looks like it took a couple of whacks from a hammer or something, possibly the cousin trying to free pistons.

Will a new head gasket cover this little bit of damage? If not do you think I could use a product called JB WELD then grind it level? thanks again for your help

The surfaces of the block and cylinder head must be perfect. A gasket would not correct a imperfection such as a indentation. I've always used Gray "Marine Tex" (not white) for cases such as that but I suppose that JB Weld might would do the trick also.... worth a try.
