I have a 1977 Mercury 70 HP outboard. Under load, towing a tube for awhile, the
motor losses power. If you stop towing and put it in reverse, than forward
it will work fine again. Any ideas of what would be breaking down?

Re: Losing Power

First thought that comes to mind is maybe the prop is slipping (Spun). When you reverse, it may tighten up and then work OK in forward for a while.

Re: Losing Power

Actually I can think of several things, electrical being somewhat down the list near prop slippage.

Fuel starvation comes to mind first, slight overheating 2nd.

-W

Re: Losing Power

I could be wrong but shouldn't a '77 not yet have ADI ignition?

-W
