Lost 12 mph HELP with 140 looper!!!

I recently blew the lower unit on my 1988 johnson 140 looper so I replaced the lower unit with one from a 1986 johnson 110 crossflow. The lower unit fit like a glove and bolted right up. Gears are working fine and motor is running great. Problem is my speed. I understand the gear ratios are different in the lower units but 25% decrease in speed does make much sense. Anyhow I had a 19 pitch prop and I was only getting 5000rpm with the new lower unit and going 31mph. So I tried a 17 pitch and I am getting 5500rpm wide open trimmed up and only getting 32.5 mph. It used to go 46mph with the old lower unit with the 19 pitch. My concern is burning all this fuel with such little power with a big *** 500lb motor on a 17 foot boat only pushing 32mph. Doesnt make much sense to me. I can just get a 90hp and go 42mph. And I have a 140 and only go 32 mph???? Does this make sense?? Doesnt seem right to me and I'm goin to waste all this money on fuel and take an extra 10minutes to get to my honey hole. What should I do?? Do I have to live with this?? Is there a solution?? I was thinking about raising the motor on the transom to gain some mph. Thanks for any replies.

Re: Lost 12 mph HELP with 140 looper!!!

The ratio difference is about 12% The 110 ratio is higher 2:00, 140 is 2:25. Lower But I would suspect some other change.Perhaps the
throttle is not opening all the way.Maybe some how the timing got messed up.Perhaps one cylinder is not fireing.
Perhaps the height of the antivent plate is different.
Should be about even with the bottom to an inch above.Wouldn't affect speed too much unless really really low.

If your looper is a 20" motor you should have the same ratio. If your old unit was a different ratio then the same prop would not fit on the crossflow gearcase. You indicated you're using the same exact prop, not a different one with the same pitch so we'll assume both units are 2:1 ratio.

Are you using the exact same prop on both units?

My info which is not confirmed says 86 110 is 2.00 88 140 is 2.25.The 86 140 is listed at 2.00.
140 is 15 spline the 110 13.He says he is dealing with an 86 110 and an 88 140.

Re: Lost 12 mph HELP with 140 looper!!!

Both lower units are 13 spline and yes the same exact prop fit both lu. Actually the 17 pitch came with the 140 but I switched to the 19 and got much better speed/performance on the 140. I went 46mph before the lu blew out. Then when I put the lu from the 110 on the 140 with the 19 pitch the hole shot was terrible and I only went 31 mph at WOT with 5000rpm. I was told to go with lower pitch so I tried the 17 and I went 32.6 mph at WOT at 5500 rpm. It is better than the 19. I will check the timing and make sure I am getting fuel and fire to all cylinders. Also I can raise the motor on the transom 2 holes to get more speed. I am sure the throttle plates are 90 degrees at WOT. I will mess with it and see what happens. Just cant see how I went 46mph and then switched lower units and DIDNOT touch a thing else and now I go 32mph?? WHAT am I missing??

Are you using a GPS for your speed measurements?

Re: Lost 12 mph HELP with 140 looper!!!

According to my info the 87 140 is a 13 spline 2.00 ratio 88 is 15 spline,2.25. the 86 110 is 13 spline 2.00 ratio.
So the ratio is supposed to be the same if the splines match.
It sure seems that something else is going on besides a leg change.

Use a sharp tool and index your prop it may have spun hub ...

Really need some hard numbers to run thru a calculator to see what's exactly going on.
GPS Speed
WOT RPM
Gear Ratio
LOA
Weight.
Prop Pitch
Hopefully I didn't miss something. Plug in the gear ratio values Steelespike posted. Find where you're at and adjust the pitch in the calculator to see where you can go. Plug these into the URL below...
