How much should I lower it. Cut, make a new plate, weld, prime, paint, I love it. I've got so much inito this old trailer. I still need fenders too.

The smile would be cool. Ownership is no problem, he outright claimed this boat within 5 minutes of being home. Outflanked me in front of mom.

Don - Looking at the post pic, I think if you moved the winch to the front of the post with two shackle bolts (not u bolts, the squared ones) and move it so you have a straighter pull on the bow would do it. If the bow stop is bolted on move it down a little. Wish I could photoshop. Hope that made sense.

Looks to me like if the rope came off the bottom of the winch instead of top that would fix the problem not sure if thats an option though.?

That's possible I'll try it. If not I'm whacking 4-6" off the post.

The front roller is too short and the bracket needs to be lengthed (welded piece or re-made). I love trailer work. I really, really love it.

Citristrip didn't do much to the transom or the varnish on the seats. Do you remove it when it's still moist or after it's dried? I'm getting some soda this weekend and try the soda blaster. Maybe. I'll keep banging my head against the wall until.... I come up with a better idea.

I need to measure and cut the transom pieces.

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

you only need to get the finish nice on the top & edges of the seats--just get the bottoms to where new varnish will adhere. i think i'd just go back to the jitterbug and 60 grit alox. you might get Zach to help on this part----you can see visible progress so it will keep him motivATED and a jitterbug is a pretty safe power tool even for a kid. ???

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

Yooper I moved the bowstrap underneath. It looks like it worked! Gracias my Michagander buddy. I'll post pictures and ya'll can decide.

I can't get the seats down to bare wood. I used a palm-sander and 60 grit and there is still some varnish (?) left. It doesn't sand off it just glazes over. Do I need to get it all off? I think I do.

The seats look like mahagony. Should I epoxy and then varnish or just varnish? Everytime I time I think I have things figured out....

Rough cut the transom pieces and started sanding. I glued two half pieces together for a 1" total thickness. We're picking away it it slowly but surely.

I'm thinking more stripper. Maybe some heat too. I went on a wooden boat site and they said chemicals and heat to strip off the old varnish.

I got a heat gun and I ain't afraid to use it! I put down the third coat of Citristrip and I'm starting to see bare wood I think. PITA!

Don--

why do you think you need to get all the old stuff off? for appearance, yeah, but i think you can varnish over some old stuff. that "soft" stuff that is gumming up your pads sounds iffy to varnish over, tho. maybe try open grit paper from an auto body supply if the stripper doesn't get it all? heat IS critical to making the stuff work but you don't necessarily need heat gun...put it in sun, covered with clear or black ag plastic.

Instead of fighting it, why don't you just seal it and put foam rubber on top and wrap upholstery around it. A lot more comfortable to sit on for long periods of time.

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

heyyou3325, if it was marine plywood I would just go around it. Cover it or paint it, just make it look good. The seats are mahogany though. I have a fascination with it, I love the look of finished mahagony. I actually thought of taking it to a wood shop and getting 1/64" planed off the top.

Time to go remove another coat of Citristrip off the seats. Is 8:30 AM too early to start using a power sander?:D

Power planer just might be the way to go, Don. The more you sand, the more wood you remove so a planer gets rid of the old finish and makes a nice smooth flat surface. I understand trying to resurrect your mahogany. Your power sander doesn't bother me, go for - LOL.

Yea, I hadn't seen it was mahagony. GA boater is right that a planer will take off more wood sooner, depending on how thick your board is. I don't do too well refinishing lumber. Been about 20 years trying to refinish my Grandmother's old table. Not sure what type wood, but 3 or 4 coats of paint, and all sorts of fine detail work, in a table from before 1920.

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

Switched to a belt sander then went back over it with a 1/3 sheet sander and 1/4 sheet palm sander. I'm really sorry I didn't get it planed, really sorry. It was 101 degrees here in Michigan and the humidity was super high. I'll get it done but sheees, I'm paying a price here.

Zach won't sand because he has an aversion to noise. I've got the boy two sets of ear muffs but he wasn't interested. Every time I started the sander he moves towards the back of the yard.

After sanding epoxy, and then multiple coats of spar varnish. Of course a butt load of sandiing in between coats. Hope everyones project is going good.

heyyou, try citristrip. It's pretty gentle.

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

Thanks yoop, stubborness got me through it though. I got a belt sander and put some time into it. My son was a trooper today and sanded for the better part of 2 hours. We did take a couple of breaks, watched Pawnstars for a few and ate Mcdonalds. I was truly proud of him. No long breaks and he likes Pawnstars too (especially the guns they get). He was motivated today.

He did insist on ear protection (noise hyper-sensitive) and eye protection. He got sawdust in his eyes and that was it. He broke out the safety goggles. He was funny to watch.

We started with 60 grit and ended with 220 grit. Those boards are baby butt smooth. We were rubbing them on our faces and telling each other how great it felt. A quality day with the boy for sure.

Manana is epoxy day. Followed by varnishing. Man I can't wait. 3 seats the inside, and outside transom.

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

This is what I started with. Wheathered and worn seats. Plus the previuos owner threw a coat of varnish or something on them IMO it made it worse.
