Zac is younger than Hugh was beginning in it. He was about 10. Did fine til the instructor took them outside with no shoes in the snow. Hugh took one step into the snow and turned around went back inside got dressed and walked almost 2 miles to where I work and that was it. I've known the instructor for over 40 years. He told me Hugh was doing great until then, and he refused to go back. After all the times I've had frost bite, I sort of can't blame him. I understand how working on boats gives you a break. Outside work did me too. Gotta be careful tho, walked back up to the house and Hugh was complaining to his mom about his eyes burning while he was asking her why I was playing with sparklers without inviting him or my daughter. I was welding. Get all the bonding in you can, soon enough they grow up and leave home. You should all visit your Dad's more too, soon enough they get old and die. It'll happen to us too. As I recall BD you're only a couple years younger than I am. H... getting old.

Well Zach went to belt presentation and sat out. Shihan (master teacher, 5th degree black belt) wouldn't give him his green belt and I don't blame him. Harsh lesson but he needs to step up. He can do all the Kata's (forms) but sometimes he can be very uncooperative. He gets overwhelmed easily and then retreats into his shell. Karate is supposed to help this, I believe it's helped and will continue to help. At the rate it's going mine is never leaving home. lol

I'm going to paint the inside today. I'll mix flat white with the blue/green 50/50 throw the sand in, a little salt over my left shoulder and away we go.

Two steps forward one back. sigh

I work with a several autistic adults. If they are not the center of attention, they often do well in a smallish crowd as long as it's not in too small an area. Other times, even 1 on 1, it's difficult for them to connect & communicate confidently, if at all. Add the commotion of families celebrating, cheering, clapping during the presentations, it's easy to imagine he wasn't comfortable. We never know the how or the why when we get unexpected responses/actions from our clients, we just have to take it as comes, and do what we can.

Sometimes reveling in the summed total of a few of the smaller individual steps has to be sufficient, he attended.

Just doing things with him is what counts. My son would always get to the botoom rung of the ladder with no place to go, and then knowing all or nothing to ok, not great but ok. For an autistic kid that's great. It'll all work out with him, enjoy your time together. Mines over a thousand miles away, sort of hard to help him, never could force him, to do something. He is still trying to do karate for you.

Well I mixed up a batch, 1/3 each of, high gloss blue/Green, flat white, and mineral spirits. 50/50 vinegar wash, Zinc Chromate, Rusto primer, and then painted. It looks flat to me. Baby blueish, it'll grow on us.

Zach and I analyzed why he did not get his belt today. We boiled it down to him not working hard enough at home. He wasn't comfortable with the form because he had not practiced enough at home. He could do them (kata's), he wasn't polished enough at them. As far as the autism and being overwhelmed, he needs to try and push through it. Sometimes he does and sometimes he doesn't. We're working on that.

Heyyou, it's getting harder to force Zach as he gets older. I'm signing up for another year in Karate. If I pay he's going. He's still smaller than me. It's for his own good.

JB, I rolled the dice today and told Zach it was up to him whether he went or not. I got lucky and he went, unlucky that he sat out. It's a marathon not a sprint. He told me he was a failure, no buddy you failed, you'll get it next time.

If the paint is too light blue, or flat, the Valspar hardener tends to add glossy. On the 2nd coat (3rd?) might try more color or less white. Particularly if it's too flat. Gloss 'should' be easier to clean. Now that it's painted & not in primer, a slight change in color will still cover fairly easy.

In other products, it does not take much flat, to temper gloss. 50/50 doesn't usually yield semi-gloss, add in the spirits thinner & even less gloss..

I changed my magical formula;

Here's my formula
Mineral Spirits 9 oz
Gloss Blue (peace River) 11 oz
Gloss White 8oz
total ____________28oz

Definitely not glossy. It's totally flat.

Looks pretty ok. Camera battery is low. I'll snap a pic of the interior when I get a chance. I plan on 3-4 coats, they are kind of thin.

Lookin good. Tell Zac he's doing a good job keeping your nose to the wheel. I've been mixing my own paint too, but not as precise as you. Keep it written down so you don't forget. Then you can forget where you wrote it down.
I saw a 12 ft trihull with 2 adults and 3 kids in it today on the lake here, a couple hundred yards from shore. Going wide open with bow in the air. Some people don't have good sense.

nothing like boat resto to teach Z that sometimes deferred success can look like failure while in process....the difference is whether one quits at the "looks like failure" stage or presses on til it's undeniably a success

I've been trying to teach the lad about, a) not quitting, especially when it's tough going. B) learn from you're mistakes. C) Hard work, hard work, hard work. We'll get it, I hope before I die. You have much to learn young Jedi.

After two coats the inside looks pretty dang good. The final color is a nearly dead match for the Robin's egg blue used on the mid sixties boats. Every time I try to post pictures SWMBO shows up and, well you know the drill. This boat is almost done, can't wait to go fishing in it and start on the Offshore.

Heyyou, I got lucky on the paint mixing. The final color came out nice and flat. That's one in a row for me!

boat is lookin great.

those same lessons are so very tough to teach any kid. look at all the folks of our own generation(s) who never learned that. we buy donor boats from them for cheap when the carbs get cruddy..........

Mine is in the53% height wise and the 23% weight wise. just something else for me to worry about. Yours sound a little lighter than mine.I wrestled at 105 pounds my senoir year. I grew 6 inches out oh high school. I grew my final two inches in the Air force. I probably shouldn't worry but you know, it's my job. lol

We love donor boats for cheap. Yea people throw stuff away rather than fix it. Our next major project after the Offshore is a 68' Ford F-150 4x4.

We always try to build on our success. I point out to him when I "fail" and I also point out to him when I overcome. I let him know when he's looking at your guys boats, that it's work. A series of failures and then success results in a nice looking project. I think he's getting it. I'll only repeat that lesson 10,000 times. After that he's on his own.

Zach went to Karate class today ,an orange belt. He went into his intermediate class. No more hiding back in the beginning class. He worked with nun-chucks and practiced two more cota's. A lot of new stuff for an 8 year old! After class Shihan offered to test him again for his green belt, he jumped out like a hungry tiger and did it. He went home a green belt and at least 2 inches taller. So proud, he does get it. Good day today.

No work on the boat today, there are only so many hours in the day. Tomorrow I promise.

I wouldn't worry about their weight. I was a skinny scrawny kid. My senior year in high school I wrestled 148, so I was a bit bigger than BD. Weighed 145 when I went into the Air Force. 185 when I got out of basics. And 205 after tech school. When I got out and went back to the farm, I lost down to 165. 20 years later I was only 185. After my Dad and eldest brother died, I sold the cattle and haying equipment, and in less than a year I was over 200 again. Now 20+ years later I hit 235 (down to 230 now). So Their weight could very easily be tied to their activity just like mine was.
