Saw this on the news yesterday. I have know this man for well over 30 years, he was one of the very few men I could call a close friend, The community lost one of the best people in the area, he actually cared about people and tried to help. I am sort of at a loss on what to say. I had to move out of the area many years ago to escape a X wife but we remained friends over the years often meeting up to go out fishing or just to sit and talk. A sad sad day.

Re: Sheriff Shot And Killed In Mingo, WV.

It hasn't gotten any better, I moved from there about 12 years ago and at that time it wasn't to bad, but from what I have been told the drug Oxycontin is running wild with the pill mills and so on, and is of course bring a lot of very bad crimes that come with that sort of thing. I meet the man for the first time when I had moved into the area, I was working 3 rd shift at a mine and was on the way home and didn't know the roads and i ran a stop sign and got ticketed. when I went to pay it he was the JP. and at the time I had just started the job and knew I wouldn't have any money for at least 3 weeks I went in to see if I could delay paying till I had some. I explained what had happened and would be glad to pay the fine just as soon as I could , he took the ticket looked it over and tore it up, smiled at me and said try not to run that one again., That was the sort of man he was.

I will post a link or two to show you all the battle he was fighting. A lot of the towns are boarder towns with a long history of bootlegging and drug sales with the corruption going all the ways to the governors mansion. He is only one of many who was killed in the on going battle. I would guess that a large amount of the street drugs on the east cost are coming out of that county.

Saw all this on the news. It's a shame. Sounded like he was starting to make a dent in the drug problem in Mingo County. Saw where the county commision appointed his wife to the office of Sheriff. Hope she continues the good work he was doing. Sorry for your loss James. Thought and prayers go out to all his family and friends. What a shame. We need more guys like him in this world.
