Hello guys, I bought a set of controls for an older Johnson 50hp. 1972 ELS.The keys were lost by previous owner. After digging a lengthy path through the snow to my project. I see KF 64 on the ignition. Do you think a locksmith can help. Or do I need to call Johnson. Any help would be welcomed thanks. Mars bar

Re: Lost keys for Johnson

Any Johnson/Evinrude dealer with an accessory book can order the keys by that number. A LOT cheaper than a locksmith can do it. I think it's about 4.50 per key.

If you know anyone with a similar year Johnson, try their key.It has a better than 50% chance of working. The pistol shaped keys only have a few different cutting patterns. You never know.It has worked for me before.Charlie

Ditto on the comment in regard to getting a key at your local OMC/BRP dealer. I've purchased new keys for two different hydro-electric control boxes, and paid right around $5.00 each time.

I went to ishopmarine and did a search, but no matches found? I have a dealer in Fort Erie. I'll call him.

Yep, the dealer will get it for you.
My key had a crack in it and was about to be in 2 pieces. I took it to a hardware store and they found the look-a-like blank and made a duplicate. I used to make keys and I could not tell the difference, but the ignition could. I went to the local dealer to inquire and they had my key in stock.
I was in awe. It worked riight off the bat.

Re: Lost keys for Johnson

just for a gag I called a locksmith that had been in business for 35 years. He suggested I take the shift apart bring in the ignition and he would make a cast... I think he meant take me to the cleaners;) anyways most of my local marinas are closed for the season or on holidays. I found one on boats.com for $4.70 but have to figure shipping. If I can get it all for less than $20 I'll do it.

i order parts from BRP, rather than drive across town to pick them up. the parts are shipped from the same shop i would pick them. shipping is cheaper than driving across town to the shop.

I went on the BRP web site but all I got was some kind of Ceremony of someone taking over. I bet when the old fart over at St.Catharines comes back to work he'll have a whole drawer full:D

I'm in Canada and I just went through getting 2 keys for my Evinrude FICHT's. $7.50 CAD from the dealer. There are LOTS of BRP dealers in Ont. You have to be close to one.

Re: Lost keys for Johnson

Bought several new sets of keys for OMC controls, never a problem at the dealer.
One Merc dealer however told me that I was screwed and needed new controls, but that they didn't usually bother with such an old motor, ('95). They would gladly sell me a new motor though.
I got the new keys from a local lock shop, who only had to look at the lock to come up with a cut code. He simply typed in the lock code, inserted the blank and the machine cut the key to match.
There are modern key machines these days that work in conjunction with a PC and can cut keys exact to a manufacturers key code.

Re: Lost keys for Johnson

Exactly, a real locksmith can cut a key from the KF number. Problem is finding a real locksmith. I just had a guy try two times to duplicate a key for my Honda motorcycle and neither one worked. And he had a good key to work from.

A few years ago, I locked my keys in my truck. Called a locksmith and he just looked through the window at the keys laying on the seat, made a new one from what he saw, stuck it in the door and opened it right up. Now there is a real locksmith.
