Re: Lost my friend and companion of 14 years yesterday

Many thanks for all of your comments and support. It really does help by sharing your personal experiences.

I take great comfort in the fact that he passed away in his home, with the people he loved and trusted. I feel truly fortunate that he was part of our lives for as long as he was, and how he enriched our lives.

I've thought about the "next dog" scenario numerous times over the last couple years but honestly, I don't think it would be fair to the next dog. Jake was an exceptionally well behaved and smart dog. I would be constantly comparing old vs new. Maybe time will change how I feel but for now I just need to get over the loss of my dear friend.

A special thanks to Tim Frank for the post by Tashasdaddy. I really needed the smiles and chuckles. That one is a keeper.

Think about the next dog scenerio all you want,if its gods plan to put you togeather with another dog than it will be.My storie was i would never get another one after 13 yrs on the lake with my angel but she sits aside me now true and loyal as can be,you will be ok my friend trust me,now its tears and memories and even regrets about not walking them enough or even maybe that beating you gave it that makes you feel guilty.know what i mean? With the new dog all the feelings are the same and you know when to check yourself against those hand wacks. With age and time we find ourselfes always learning. This is a honest post and many wont answer truthfully, but its all the same in gods eyes confess now and god will rewrd ya!

You are so right my friend. I'm already regretting the little wacks when she was less than a year old and chewed my wallet and credit cards.....and she is only 3 now.

Moody,

I know that there is no such thing as a 'replacement dog', but you need a dog, and there is a dog that needs you.

Please name that dog, "Tasha"

lots of wonderful thoughts and sentiments but this one gets my attention the most. the OP sounds like a great pack leader. all (ok most) dogs are special in their own way/personality. the new dog doesn't become a competition to be better than the last. no 2 are the same when you get to know them well enough.

i put my college 'buddy' down several years ago now. i didn't get another dog for about 2.5 years. not sure how i did that looking back. there's nothing that can fill the void like another dog. i'm not saying the new dog will replace Jake. that's probably like saying your youngest child made you care less about your oldest.

When my dog Clamp passed, I didn't get another one for many years thinking that in someway I was pushing him aside emotionally. We were best friends. He visited every state with me but a few. When I finally got Goon, I realized how much I missed having the unconditional love of a dog, and loving a dog unconditionally. Jake would want you to have another friend. It will give you immediate joy, and God knows there is a dog that needs you! Don't deprive the three of you by making my mistake. Best Wishes!

Rough week for dogs I guess. Our 8 year old vizsla died tonight. Wife took her out to fetch with our other dogs and when they came in she seemed to be having trouble breathing. Took her to the 24 hr clinic and she walked in fine and crashed on the table within about 30 minutes and that's all there was to it. Later figured out 2 of them ran into each other and she must have sustained some sort of injury, we're not really sure. Vet said most people probably wouldn't have even noticed, just would have gone to bed and found the dog dead in the morning, not that it would have mattered I guess. I was at work, working and didn't hear about it until it was all over. No cell phones allowed and she didn't think to call the emerg. number.

has your dog faded from your memory at all yet? It will, get a new dog to keep the memory alive ,unless your done. tough words now but will make sense later.

It wasn’t until we lost our Beagle after 14 years of affection that I truly understood pain and heartbreak. Even today, 10 years later we still think about her and miss her. About 5 years ago, we adopted another Beagle rescue. Separation anxiety, loved to tear up everything in the house, barked constantly. She is evolving into an old lady and I figure we have about 4 to 6 years left. Still, each night when I come home she climbs onto my chest and wraps her front legs around my neck and hugs tight; her head on my shoulder. She is now about 9 and is still our baby. Last year we inherited our son’s Wiemaraner. At 3 months old, she came will all the challenges of a puppy. Now grown into a magnificent animal, I am heartily greeted each day by both of them; wagging tails, slobbery kisses, and both think they are lap dogs and of course, I am the King of the World. One day, I know, we will say goodbye and I don’t want to have that pain again, but it is inevitable. Only an animal lover can understand this kind of pain. Only an animal lover can understand this kind of love. Unconditional and undeniable. Only an animal lover can carry a memory in their heart forever.

I am so sorry for your loss.
