Hello Guys!

I was wanting to know if anyone knew any information about how to get a lost title in NC. I was thinking about purchasing 2 jetskis on a double trailer from a guy this weekend. He says he has the title to trailer, but we would have to get the title from the wildlife, as he has lost the title. Didn't know if I was getting into something that was gonna be easy or hard. Any suggestions?

Re: Lost Title

It is the seller's problem to solve, not yours.

He has to get the titles, and can probably get a duplicate title, since he lost them.

Do not buy the things until he has the titles in his hand to give to you.

What Tpenfield said. Take it from me, it's not worth the misery to try to straighten out the seller's mess. If he doesn't have a good title to put in your hand, you are going to regret being involved. Even if he does have a paper title, look at it to verify *his* name is on it. If it's the previous owner's name, run in the other direction as you will be the one regretting the purchase.

I don't know how unique North Carolina is among states, but we have the pleasure of dealing with two different agencies when we buy a boat here: The DMV for the boat trailer and the Wildlife Commission for the boat or jetskis themselves. Both issue titles for their respective responsibilities and both have a relatively easy path for the present owner to replace lost paperwork. The easy path gets slammed in your face if anybody other than the owner of record applies for a duplicate title, so let him take care of this. What's easy for him would be a nightmare for you.

If the deal falls through, there are plenty of jetskis out there. Don't let your emotions dictate your actions.

Don't ask me how I know this.

Precisely. If he had legitimate titles, he can easily replace them. I wouldn't go anywhere near this deal until all the paperwork was in order and in hand.

(That goes too for trailers w/o paperwork that 'can easily be registered as homemade'. If it's so easy, the seller can do it)

Illinois has this sort of a system, too. Jay is 100% correct. If the paperwork isn't in the seller's name and in-hand, walk away (or wait until the situation has been corrected). Dealing with state agencies, even where they're trying to be helpful, is a huge pain when the seller can't produce a clear title.
