sorry, Mick. rattle doesn't sound serious, but don't mean to minimize it either. Frank's suggestion about the spring might get it. By "linkage", I mean darned near any linkages from throttle linkage to carb -- to the latch assembly. Pnwboat has it right, I think -- need two people to pinpoint the rattle.
Did you get the switch fixed? the ping at the starter bendix? The starter switch is a momentary switch in the start position, as you know, so maybe the return in the switch is worn out -- spring return?
