Re: Low well pressure.

.....
As an example, i have a shallow well pump that will deliver 6 gallons of water from max pressure (60 PSI) to cut-in.(30 PSI)......

Tim, for better or for worse, the industry has deigned that the optimal spread between pump turn on and pump turn off should be 20 psi. This can be verified by the fact that all pressure switches that you buy have a 20 lb spread built into them. This is true whether you buy a 20-40 (probably cannot find one today) or a 30-50 or a 40-60.

The reason behind this is that someone determined that the optimal compromise between draw down volume, pump rest time and the fluctuation of pressure between the two, is 20 pounds.

The difference in fixture performance between 30 and 60 psi is just too great to make you think you are on constant pressure city water.

Re: Low well pressure.

Thanks again folks,

I finally got around to taking a look at the well pressure, it appears my cut in/cut out is set at 20-40. Got some more air into the tank, having read through the link above, and the pressure is better. Still not like city pressure but at least good enough for now. Plan to make a couple more checks to make sure I'm not losing pressure somewhere, might boost the pressures up a bit too.

For what it's worth, the tank appears to be in pretty good shape, it is a non-bladder type. There where no visible leaks anywhere, but it was quiet damp from recent rains, so it is possible that I'll find a leak or more at a later time.

Thanks,

Dale.

Re: Low well pressure.

If you have a modern SquareD switch, tighten down the long stud nut, the one that holds the cap on, until the pump is operating at 40-60 psi. Then shut off the pump, drain all the water out of thr tank and pressure the tank up to 36/37 psi. Then turn the pump back on.

You cannot properly balance the tank pressure when it is full of water and already under pressure.

Re: Low well pressure.

Just thought I'd update with the end results. Finally got the system back up and running properly. There is no point at the tank to properly drain ALL the water out and that's where my issue was. Once i was able to get the tank empty everything went smooth. Thanks again for all of your help.
