I posted a thread several days ago about removing the bearing carrier assembly from a mid '70's lower unit from a L6 outboard and need a few clarifications on something: From what im reading and seeing in my Merc manual im under the impression that the carrier along with the prop shaft will come out as one whole unit...is this a correct statement? Im trying to pull this as a complete assembly but can't get it to budge and i have studied the assembly diagrams and see nothing in the gear are that would prevent the prop shaft from coming with the carrier. I know that the Alpha lower units the carrier has to be removed first and seperately from the prop shaft, but i don't see this with this LU! The carrier area doesn't show a lot of corrosion and i've been soaking it in Liquid wrench, using heat around the outside of the case around the carrier, but it still won't budge. This LU is locked-up, prop shaft and drive shaft. Whatcha all think?

The bearing carrier is very likely holding you up. I believe the entire propshaft assembly will come out, however, why do you care? Concentrate on removing the bearing carrier. The rest is academic.

Chris, the reason i was trying to pull it as an assembly is becuase i don't have a long-jawed puller to reach the carrier, plus with the prop shaft locked-up i was able to make a spacer to go down over the prop shaft so i could use the shaft as my pull mechanism. I have decided to try and remove the carrier up off the prop shaft then go from there! Gotta get a puller!

I bought long eye bolts to grab the bearing carrier, that fit the puller. I used plumbers strap to keep the eyes from straightening.

The prop shaft may indeed come out with the carrier, or it may be hung up, as the shaft is seized.
